The Legend of Kyrandia (formerly Fables & amp; Fiends ) is a series of point-and-click graphic adventure games , developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games.

This is especially true in Kyrandia's fantasy land, where the player assumes the role of young hero Brandon ( Book One ), the mystic kingdom of Zanthia ( Book Two ) and Malcolm's bad jester trial ( Book Three ); the antagonist of the first game. Played in 2D format from a third-person perspective, each game uses a point-and-click interface to guide the characters around the game world; solve puzzles and quests, while interacting with the in-game characters and environment.

The series began in 1992 with the release of Fables and Fiends (changed from The Legend of Kyrandia ), and spawned two sequels The Hand of Fate 1993) and Malcolm's Revenge (1994). The series is now owned by Electronic Arts and is available digitally at GOG.com.

The name and release format are as follows:

  1. The Legend of Kyrandia: Book One - Tales and Demons - Floppy disks, CD-ROMs (re-released in 1993 with sound support).
  2. The Legend of Kyrandia: The Second Book - Hand of Fate - Floppy disks and CD-ROMs.
  3. The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three - Malcolm Revenge - CD-ROM only.

Gameplay

The Legend of Kyrandia is known for its very simple interface, a feature that is present in all three games in the series. Though vaguely reminiscent of the point-and-click adventure game of that period, the main detail distinguishing Westwood trilogy is the use of a single "use" action, which is contrary to the multi-action interface.

All three games are characterized by a fairly innovative inventory system. It is important for various physical actions that allowed you to subject items, especially the great freedom of dropping and picking up objects, which are used for some puzzles. In general, the puzzles in this series are based on experiments with inventory items, incorporating them or storing them in the right places.

Plot

Message One - Fables and demons

In Kyrandia's fantasy kingdom, King William and his wife, Queen Katherine, have been killed by the wicked clown Malcolm, a madman who possesses enormous magic powers. Brandon, the prince, has been hidden in the forest by his grandfather (Queen Katherine's father), Kallak, who is also Mystical head.

Malcolm had fun destroying the trees in the country, and facing Kallak, turning him into stone. Brandon, unaware of his past, soon discovered the truth about his origins. He finds out that Malcolm has stolen Kyragem, a mystical stone containing royal energy. Brandon had to restore Kyragem and defeat Malcolm.

After many adventures, it also includes a king's trophy along the way (not to mention learning four different magical spells), Brandon heads to the king's castle, which Malcolm now occupies. Here he finds most of his former friends and allies transformed into stone by Malcolm as well as the magical wand and crown king. Putting this together he paved the way into Malcolm's private space, where Kyragem is located. He faced Malcolm and headed for the Kyragem room. After becoming invisible (one of his magic powers) he walks into a giant mirror, where Malcolm throws a magic sphere, which bounces off the mirror, turning Malcolm into stone. Brandon became King, his friends freed, and Kyragem was returned to his proper place.

Book Two - Hand of Fate

Years later, Zanthia, a beautiful young female alchemist and sorcerer found in the first game, discovered that the kingdom of Kyrandia was in grave danger, disappearing piece by piece. The Mystics held a meeting, and The Hand (the giant gloves serving as Marko's assistant, one of Mystics) formulated a plan, requiring the magical anchor stone from the center of the world. He chose Zanthia to be the one who will restore the stone. However, it turns out, the search for anchor rocks is a snipe hunt, used by The Hand to distract Zanthia and other Mystics while enforcing his crime. The Hand, supposedly a fragment of a long-dead giant evil wizard, is the true villain of the game, and Zanthia must defeat him in the end. This game is characterized by a far more strange humor than its predecessor.

Also in this game Marko, who actually likes Zanthia, must be saved several times by players (if he chooses, they can leave Marko to escape himself). This game also features many more non-optional side quests. Instead, it is not as simple as the predecessor, who intends to seek and defeat Malcolm. In this game the player has to go to several different locations and perform various tasks to finally be able to achieve the ultimate goal. For example, one major plot point is to reach a volcanic island called "Volcania," which involves the search of a broad side with many different purposes, to reach the center of the Earth (where more tasks await Zanthia, such as playing fetch with Stegosaurus or riding a T- Rex, pick up the items to be used to make the potion - the main part of the game - before he can advance). For different purposes, Zanthia always changed her clothes with miraculous.

In the last scene after the credits, Malcolm is still a stone-seen in a junkyard not far from the castle. He was struck by lightning and the camera focused on his hand, as his fingers moved slowly and screams on the screen sounded. The story is then continued in Book Three: Malcolm's Revenge.

Book Three - Malcolm's Revenge

After Malcolm's defeat against Brandon in the first game, Malcolm has turned into a statue, but after being struck by lightning, he is freed from a spell. Malcolm then decides to take revenge upon Brandon and Kallak, aided by his evil conscience, Gunther. Though he lost his powerful magic, Malcolm decides to use his wicked and cunning craft to pass through it with his revenge. He finally proves that he is innocent of the murder of Brandon's parents.

Character

  • Brandon Spoken by Joseph D. Kucan: The protagonist of the first game in this series. A simple young carpenter in the Kyrandia forest, Brandon is actually Prince Kyrandia and the heir to the throne. When he was a baby, his parents, King William and Queen Katherine, were murdered. Soon afterwards, his grandfather, Kallak, the Mystical chief, fled from the Timbermist forest and raised him in the forest. When Malcolm attacks Kyrandia and turns Kallak into stone, Brandon begins to defeat the evil clown. In the tradition of adventure game heroes like Roger Wilco and Guybrush Threepwood, Brandon is portrayed as a well-intentioned but not very intelligent man. In the third game of the series, Brandon has inherited the throne and become King of Kyrandia, but his grandfather Kallak (Queen Katherine's father) holds real strength due to Brandon's rather ingenious nature.
  • Zanthia Spoken by Bonnie Lynn Toups (voiced by Ginalyn Torrecilla at Book One ): The protagonist of the second game in this series. Zanthia is a member of Mystical Advisory and a powerful magic user, although he relies heavily on the use of reagents to cast spells. Perhaps it was the Kyrian people, the intelligent, self-confident, and level-headed personality of Zanthia.
  • Malcolm Spoken by Eric Randall (voiced by Gary W. Hyatt on Book One ): The main antagonist of the series, and the protagonist of the third and final game. Malcolm was a cruel, sarcastic, and crazy clown who ruled powerful magic. He is also a cousin of the late King of Kyrandia, and is widely believed to be the murderer of the royal family (though this is revealed incorrectly at the end of the last game). At the end of the first game, Malcolm is defeated by Brandon, who reflects his own magic back on him and turns him into stone. In the third game, Malcolm is released by lightning, but loses his magical powers, forcing him to rely on his reason to survive, take revenge and finally clear his name.

Reception

In 1992, Robin Matthews's World of Computer Games ' depicts The Legend of Kyrandia as a cross between Loom , King's Quest V and Secret of Monkey Island 2 ", praised the" beautifully drawn "VGA graphics and humor. The magazine concludes that "the storyline is hardly genuine... but the presentation of the game, the general quality and the nuance, makes this as a promising debut and a welcome addition to the world of graphic adventure." In April 1994, the magazine said that the CD version of "is a quality product throughout" that adds digital sound to stunning "games" and "graphics, if somewhat short", and suggests Westwood to "just release a CD version of their first title ". The first installment in the series received 5/5 in Dragon, while The Hand of Fate received 4/5.

In 1994, Computer Gaming World ' s Scorpia approved Hand of Fate ' to avoid un-winning gameplay and "A definite improvement in the construction of the puzzle above Kyrandia " even though "Westwood is still a bit too fond of red herrings". He criticized the shortness of the game and "really sick", arcade endgame, but concluded that Hand of Fate increased in "Much of what was wrong with Legend of Kyrandia ", and great for people looking for short adventure games.

Malcolm's Revenge

Scorpia of Computer Gaming World writes, " Malcolm's Revenge is a refreshing game in many ways, though frustrating on many others.Obviously not a game for early or impatient players."

The Malcolm's Revenge Award won the 1994 Best Entertainment Game '. The editors wrote that the game "offers more of the same, and then some." PC Gamer US nominated Malcolm's Revenge for the 1994 Best Adventure Game award, but lost to System Shock.

Name of confusion

Originally this series was known as Fabel & amp; Devil series with the first installment entitled: Fabel & amp; Devil - Book One: The Legend of Kyrandia . When the first sequel Fabel & amp; The Devil - The Hand of Destiny was released, "Book Two" removed from the title, but an alternative version of the cover art of the game shows it also called The Legend of Kyrandia - Book Two , with "The Hand of Fate" removed. Name Hand of Fate is still in the game itself.

When the next sequel Fabel & amp; Devil - Malcolm's revenge arrives, confusing again, an alternative cover art shows it is also called The Legend of Kyrandia - Book 3: The Malcolm Retaliation . Another continuity error is the numeric view 3 rather than the Three alphabet, but in the alphabetical form is still in use.

Finally, a compilation of this series was released although only the new box art. This new artwork is officially named the trilogy as The Legend of Kyrandia series, with all three installments bundled together as Book One - Fables and Devils , Book Two - Hand of Destiny and Book Three - Malcolm's Revenge . Also, the ampersand symbol in the title Fables and Demons is changed to alphabet.
