Boilermaker can refer to two types of beer cocktails. In American terminology, the drink consists of a glass of beer and whiskey. Beer is served as a pursuer or mixed with whiskey. The combination of shots and beers produces a faster onset of the alcoholic hangover effect. When beer is served as a chaser, this drink is often called just shot and beer . In Philadelphia, this is often referred to as the City Special. In Texas, this is known as Two Steps.
The drink came from Butte, Montana in the 1890s, and was originally called "Sean O'Farrell" and was only served when miners ended their shifts.
In the UK, the term boilermaker traditionally refers to a half pint of lightweight draft mixed with half pints of brown ale bottles, though now also typically refers to the American shot and pint. In Scotland, Half Half is half pint of beer with whiskey ('haul'). The use of these terms in Scottish and English pubs can be traced back to about 1920.

Drink
There are a number of ways to drink an American boiled machine:
- Traditionally, liquor is drunk in one gulp and then "chased" by beer, which is inhaled.
- Liquor and beer can be mixed by pouring or dropping a shot into a beer. The mixture may be stirred, if desired. If the actual glass falls into a beer glass, this drink is known as a depth charge.
- Liquor can be poured directly into an open beer bottle or it can after having spent a portion of the beer.
