Manufacturing

In January 2014, General Mills announced that it would stop using genetically modified materials in the original Cheerios. In February 2015, the company announced that it would make gluten-free Cheerios by removing traces of wheat, rye, and barley that normally come into contact with the oat supply used to make Cheerios during transportation to the General Mills plant in Buffalo, New York along Lake Erie.

Ads

Many television commercials for Cheerios target children featuring animated characters (such as Honeybee animations). Bullwinkle was shown in the early 1960s ad, with the tag line at the end of the ad "Go with Cheerios!" followed by Bullwinkle, is usually worse to wear because the Cheerios-inspired bravery somewhat boomerang, saying "... but be careful where you go!" Hoppity Hooper was also featured in advertisements in the mid-1960s, as General Mills was the lead sponsor of his animation program. From 1969 to 1972, Cheerios and Sue's boys met with criminals and escaped from him and the Cheerios boy poured the cereal into a bowl and jingle "Get yourself go" to play. The Cheerios go to the spiral and into Kid's Kid and Sue's muscles escape and track down the villain and the Cheerios boy says his slogan is "Get Cheerios". Jingle borrowed The Monkees's "I'm a Believer" and "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You" which was released 3 years earlier.

The Cheerios Kid

Beginning in the mid-1950s and continuing into the early 1960s, "The Cheerios Kid" was a mainstay in the Cheerios commercials. The Kid, after eating Cheerios, quickly takes care of any issues presented in the ad, using the "Big-G, little-o" "Go-power" produced by oats. The character was revived briefly in the late 1980s in a similar ad. In 2012, The Cheerios Kid and Sue sidekick were revived in an online internet video showing how Cheerios "can lower cholesterol". The "Kid" and Sue video clips are part of a montage included in a 2014 TV commercial, along with an early Honey Nut Cheerios bee advertising clip.

Peanuts

In 1984 and 1985, characters from Peanuts comics were featured in many Cheerios ads. In advertisements, characters get tired in the middle of things (eg dancing lessons, playing tennis), but then other characters tell them that they do not have a healthy breakfast, Cheerios breakfast. Then at the end of the ad, his character will have a lot of energy, followed by children who sing, "You're on your toes with Cheerios!".

Spoonfuls Stories

The Spoonfuls Stories program, started in 2002, is sponsored by the Cheerios and the 50/50 joint venture of General Hills and Simon & amp; Schuster. Mini version of Simon & amp; Schuster children's books are published in the program when the book drive takes place. The program also includes the New Writers contest; the winning book is published in miniature, in the Cheerios box.

Shawn Johnson

In 2009, Olympic gold medalist and world gymnast Shawn Johnson became the first athlete to take pictures in front of the Cheerios box. The limited edition is distributed in the Midwestern region of the United States by the Hy-Vee grocery chain.

Simply Examine

In 2013, a Cheerios advertisement aired, entitled "Just Checking," featuring an interracial family in which a princess asks her mother (white) if the Cheerios is kind to the heart, like her (black) father mentioned. The mother said the cereal was good according to the box stating that whole grains lowered cholesterol. The next scene shows the father waking up when a stack of Cheerios spills over his chest, which his daughter puts down there after taking his father's words literally. The ad received an unintentional dislike of the anger on an ad that showed a biracial family, with some claiming it was the result of racism while others claimed that the ad was deliberately using racial "tokenism" identity to serve customers from a particular political agenda. This is so extreme that General Mills disables further comment on the video. In 2014, General Mills released a Super Bowl ad titled "Gracie", featuring the same family: in commercial, father, using Cheerios to describe its meaning, telling girls that newborns are born, that their mother is pregnant, and girls are receiving - provided they also get puppies and father agrees while the mother looks a bit surprised.

Vortexx

To promote the premiere of the Vortexx block on Saturday morning at The CW Television Network in August 2012, the Cheerios special box is labeled "Vortexx O's", complete with a backward schedule, and wordmarks emblazoned in one of Vortexx's promotional backgrounds. Toys are also included in the box, featuring John Cena, Iron man, and Pink Power Ranger

In 2017, Latrell James is hired to sing a song for a new Cheerios ad. This ad is easily recognizable by restraining "Good swirling around and around."

FDA 2009 Request

In May 2009, the US Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to General Mills indicating that Cheerios was being sold as an unapproved new drug because of partially readable labeling:

o "You Can Lose Your Cholesterol 4% in 6 Weeks"
o "Did you know that in just 6 weeks Cheerios can reduce bad cholesterol by an average of 4 percent? A cheerios is... clinically proven to lower cholesterol.A clinical study shows that eating two servings of 1 ½ cup daily from Cheerios cereals reduces cholesterol evil, when eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. "

The FDA letter suggests that General Mills needs to change the way they market Cheerios or apply for federal approval to sell Cheerios as a cure. General Mills responded with a statement that their claims for soluble fiber content have been approved by the FDA, and claims about cholesterol reduction have been shown in the box for two years.

In 2012, the FDA followed up with a letter approving the labeling of Cheerios and stated that the matter was debated and did not require any further action.
