Etymology

This name is derived from the Valegian language orxata , probably from ordiata , created from ordi ("barley" & lt; Latin * hordeata hordeum ). In Spain, horchata is usually horchata de chufa, made of tiger nuts, water, and sugar.

Latin America

Horchata varies in taste in Latin America.

While in some countries these drinks are usually chocolate and "milk", some recipes call milk, and others do not. Other ingredients often include sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Although horchata was once homemade, it is now available in the form of instant-drink (rack-stable or cold) and powder in grocery stores. Horchata - along with tamarindo and Jamaica - are three flavors of Mexican aguas frescas.

  • In Mexico and Guatemala, horchata is made from rice, sometimes with vanilla and always with cinnamon.
  • In Central American countries El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica, horchata refers to a drink known as semilla de jicaro , made from ground jicaro seed with rice and spices such as cocoa powder, cinnamon, sesame seeds, nutmeg, tiger nuts and vanilla. Other beans that may also be used include peanuts, almonds and cashews. Because of these materials, horchata are usually tense before serving. Horchata in Costa Rica is mostly popular in the Pacific region of the country, particularly Puntarenas, although it is widely consumed throughout the country. Nicaragua has started exporting these products, mainly to the United States.
  • In Puerto Rico, horchata is called horchata de ajonjolÃÆ' ("sesame horchata") and is made with ground sesame seeds. Water is boiled with sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon sticks. When the water is poured over the ground sesame seeds and left overnight. The water is then squeezed through a thin cloth. Some recipes require additional rice, almonds, evaporated milk, coconut milk, allspice and rum. Horchata with barley and lime zest are also popular, but especially in homes.

United States
