Cocktail B-52 (also B52 or Bifi or Bifty ) is a coated image of coffee liquor ( KahlÃÆ'ºa), Irish cream (Baileys Irish Cream), and Grand Marnier (in newer versions replaced with triple sec or Cointreau). When correctly prepared, the ingredients are separated into three layers that are clearly visible (due to their relative density).

History

The name refers to Band B52s and not the US B-52 bomber.

B-52 was invented by Peter Fich, head of bartenders at the Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta. He named all his new drinks after favorite bands, albums and songs. This drink, of course, is named after a band of the same name. One of his first customers for a restaurant owned by B-52 in various cities in Alberta and loved the drink so much that he put it on the menu. This is why this, first shooter, is generally believed to have originated at Tong Steakhouse in Calgary, Alberta in 1977. B-52 is also rumored to have been made by Adam Honigman, a bartender at Maxwell's Plum in New York City.

The widespread popularity of B-52 has produced many variations, each getting slightly different titles (see variations below for a small sample). Overall, the drink is referred to as the B-50 series of layered cocktails.

The drink became a favorite in North London at the end of 2009 when Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner changed his shirt number from 26 to 52, earning himself the nickname "B52" in the process.

Preparation

There is a special machine that can prepare B-52 (or other multi-layered cocktails) in just a few seconds. However, experienced bartenders usually rely on traditional handmade preparations. This preparation method is called "build", instead of integrating or shaking, so that B-52 is "built".

B-52s are usually served in glasses or sherry glasses, though heat-resistant glass is required when "B-52 lights" are presented. First, a coffee drink, like Tia Maria or KahlÃÆ'ºa, is poured into a glass. Furthermore, Irish Cream Bailey poured very slowly over the spoon of a cold bar, taking care to avoid disturbing the bottom layer as the second drink poured over. Just as carefully, Grand Marnier poured over Irish Cream using a bar spoon.

These drinks are sometimes made with shakers and served in cocktail glasses, although these are less traditional.

Flaming B-52

For Flaming B-52 , the top layer is turned on, generating a blue flame. Filling the glass up reduces the amount of glass exposed to the flame, making the glass not break easily, but the beverage spills more easily. It is best to leave the B-52 burning on the bartop and drink it through a straw. Once switched on, the drinks should be finished quickly to avoid overheating of glass and burning straw. Unless the flame goes off before being drunk, a fireproof straw - like those made of metal - may be preferred.

Triple Sec at room temperature will not be combustible, so it must be heated first or above with an extra dark rum overproof layer with 65-85% alcohol based on volume. Such preparation may be referred to as "B-52 On a Mission".
