Smirnoff [sm ?? r'nof ] ) is a vodka brand owned and manufactured by the British company Diageo. The Smirnoff brand begins with a vodka refinery established in Moscow by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov (1831-1898). Now distributed in 130 countries and produced in several countries including Albania, Brazil, Honduras, India, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Mongolia, Philippines, UK and USA. Vodka is made using a traditional char filtering method developed by P.A. Smirnoff. Prescription No. 21 created by the son of P.A. Vladimir after fleeing from Russia during the October Revolution.

Histori
Pyotr Arsenjevitch Smirnov founded the vodka refinery factory in Moscow in 1864 under the trade name PA Smirnoff, a charcoal filtering pioneer in the 1870s, and became the first to use newspaper advertisements along with charitable contributions to clerics to paralyze anti-vodka sermons, two-thirds of the Moscow market in 1886. His brand was reported as a Tsar's favorite. When Pyotr died, he was replaced by his third son, Vladimir Smirnov (1875-1939). The company is growing and producing more than 4 million cases of vodka per year.
In 1904, the Tsar nationalized the Russian vodka industry and Vladimir Smirnov was forced to sell its factory and brand. During the October Revolution of 1917, the Smirnov family had to flee the country. Vladimir Smirnov re-established a factory in 1920 in Constantinople (now Istanbul). Four years later he moved to LwÃÆ'ów (formerly Poland, now Lviv, Ukraine) and began selling vodka under the contemporary French spelling of that name, "Smirnoff". This new product was sold well but not nearly the same as that of Russia before 1904. An additional distillery was set up in Paris in 1925; But the company is a shadow of its former self.
In the 1930s, Vladimir met with Rudolph Kunett, a Russian who emigrated to America in 1920 and became a successful businessman in New York City. The Kunett family has been a grain supplier to Smirnoff in Moscow before the Revolution. In 1933, Vladimir sold Kunett the right to begin producing Smirnoff vodka in North America. He then returned to the United States, quit his sales job, and set up his first North American refinery in Bethel, Connecticut, USA in 1933. However, business in America was not as successful as Kunett had hoped. In 1938, Kunett was unable to pay the necessary sales licenses, and contacted John Martin, president of Heublein. Heublein is a company specializing in the import and export of liquor and foreign food. Using the $ 14,000 Heublein company made from a new product that ultimately saved them from bankruptcy, A.1. Steak Sauce, Martin bought the right to Smirnoff in 1939. His council thought he was crazy. Americans are traditional whiskey drinkers who are unaccustomed to vodka and sales are very slow. In the marketing movement, they change the product to use a whiskey cork instead and brand it as "white whiskey" with "no taste, no smell". Sales increased rapidly after that.
In 1982, Tobacco Company R. J. Reynolds acquired Heublein Inc. worth $ 1.4 billion. RJR Nabisco sold the division to Grand Metropolitan in 1987. In 1985, Heublein Corporate Audit Manager Hanson J Kan recommended to Heublein that they purchased the Grand Metropolitan IDV Smirnoff license holder with their global license location. Grand Metropolitan joined Guinness to form Diageo in 1997.
Since the 1990's
In 1990, after the Berlin Wall fell Helmut Kohl made an agreement with Mikhail Gorbachev that allowed the reunification of Germany on condition that Soviet troops could remain in East Germany, due to a pre-existing security agreement between the GDR and the Soviet Union; such arrangements had to be paid by West Germany for three years. Suddenly 500,000 Soviet soldiers were paid hard currency and hardly anything to do but drink. They then proceed to spend their currency on Marlboro cigarettes, Levi jeans and Smirnoff vodka. US made Vodka Smirnoff is very popular.
The London Heublein office was flooded with orders and the Vice President, Jeremy Collis, began exploiting this "gusher" as much as possible. The large Smirnoff display in the shop was set up in Russian army stores and the mess officers changed its name to Smirnoff Club. Individual chaos starts serving more than 200 liters of Smirnoff night. Soviet troops became the largest market in Europe for Smirnoff outside the UK. Smirnoff was sent to Germany for 20,000 bottles a day. Moskovskaya and Stolichnaya's market share in Germany dropped from 100% to almost none.
Seeing Smirnoff's popularity among Russian troops, Collis began trying to sell Smirnoff vodka directly to the Soviet Union. The entire vodka market in the Western world at that stage was 60 million cases (Source: M. Shanken Publications: "Impact" 1991) but the Soviet market is believed to be more than 200 million cases (Source: "Impact" 1991). The first container was delivered to Leningrad in 1991 where Collis had appointed distributor, Empire Brands Inc.
In 1985, Heublein Corporate Audit Manager Hanson J Kan recommended to Heublein that they purchased Grand Metropolitan IDV Smirnoff license holders with their global license locations. But in 1987 Grand Met bought Heublein including the global Smirnoff operation from RJR Nabisco.
Empire Brands was founded by Sergey Titov, a former interpreter with no previous commercial experience. In Soviet Russia almost no one has 'commercial experience' so Titov becomes a model for expanding distribution across the country. Collis went from town to town looking for suitable individuals who could be taught how business works - buying, transporting, distributing and selling profitably. The plan is to build approved distributors in every major city and give them exclusive rights to the city because there are many cities with populations over 100,000 each of which has the potential to become a big market for Smirnoff vodka like all of Belgium or the Netherlands or the US state such as Connecticut. Outside of the Soviet state apparatus no national organization could market and distribute Smirnoff.
The demand for Smirnoff vodka is such that if properly managed and grasped the opportunity, the Russian market itself can double IDV's size, has become the world's largest beverage company. The Communists have banned Smirnoff from Russia for 70 years and in the most extreme example of this 'rejection marketing' have created awareness and demand on an extraordinary scale. Every Russian has heard of Smirnoff vodka and everyone thinks it must be the best because they are not allowed to have it. Collis believes that in 1991, selling Smirnoff on the USSR represented the greatest opportunity for consumer products in the history of marketing. But he then made a big mistake by telling this to the IDV Board. As a consequence, every director at IDV wants to be part of this incredible success story and Collis finds himself being blackmailed by other directors without the knowledge or experience of both the USSR and the brand. One director has specifically persuaded the Council that exclusive distribution rights should be given to one person in Moscow - a Greek mafioso character called Spiros without marketing or distribution experience, staff, or infrastructure. Many people then believe that massive corruption must be involved. This appointment proved bad because established customers were disconnected from buying Smirnoff unless they illegally made illegal currency payments to the Spiros company.
During the 1990s one of Piotr Smirnov's descendants began producing Smirnov (???????) vodka in Russia, claiming to be "The Only Real Smirnov". After a number of lawsuits, Smirnoff successfully reclaimed his trademark, while in 2006 Diageo ended a joint venture deal with the Smirnov company.
The Smirnoff company has the naming rights for Smirnoff Music Center, a concert amphitheater in Dallas, Texas from 2000-2008. They also sponsor Smirnoff Underbelly, the main venue in Fringe Edinburgh.
In the late 1990s, Smirnoff introduced a series of new products to the UK and then the markets of Europe and North America, which quickly became popular among youngsters, especially in the club scene (See " Alcopops ").
There are two different products with the name Smirnoff Ice . One, sold in France and the United States, is orange-scented malt beverage (5.0% ABV) with variants in "Original," and "Three Black." Others, sold in Europe (excluding France), Latin America, Australia and Canada, are prescribed vodka drinks. It also has variants in "Original" and "Black Ice" (or in some markets, "Triple Black" or "Double Black"), ranging from 4.5% in the UK, up to 7% ABV in different markets.
Smirnoff Ice is marketed in the US actually does not contain vodka according to the official website Smirnoff. It's more like beer than vodka, mainly because it's brewed. But outside the United States and countries that accept US-made vodka, it contains Smirnoff Vodka no. 21.
Smirnoff Ice Twisted is a spin-off from American Smirnoff Ice that features flavors like Mandarin Orange and Green Apple. The confusion in the branding between Smirnoff Twist Vodka and Smirnoff Twisted Malt Beverage resulted in the decision to drop the "Twisted" from the Smirnoff Ice-scented line. Ice Smirnoff's current flavors include Watermelon, Wild Wine, Passion Fruit, Mango, Triple Black, Fusion Delima, Berry Arctic (Blueberry), Green Apple Bite, Acailic Acai, Pineapple, and Raspberry Spout. It was sold in 22 oz. [650 ml] bottle and six packs of 12 oz. [355 ml] bottle.
The next line of Smirnoff's unfortunate drink to be produced is "Raw Tea", similar to the Twisted Tea brand. It comes in flavors like Lemon, Peach, Raspberry and Green Tea. This product line has been marketed mainly with music videos and the "Tea Partay" website. It is sold in six packs of 12 oz. [355 ml] bottle.
Smirnoff Source, an alternative to light, carbonated beer, was released in May 2007. It is orange flavored and made with alcohol (3.5% ABV) and springs and sold in 4-pak 1- bottle of milk [947 ml].
A line of 22 flavored vodka (based on No.21 Red Label) with the "Twist" moniker added at the end of the name has also been introduced. Flavors include Green Apple, Orange, Cranberry, Raspberry, Orange (Lemon), Vanilla, Strawberry, Black Cherry, Watermelon, Lime, Blueberry, White Wine, Melon (Melon/Melon), Pomegranate, Passion Fruit, Pear, Peach, , Mango, Coconut, and the most recent Amaretto.
Smirnoff was tested in England and Canada in 2004, a new blend of vodka called Smirnoff Penka. Marketing and distribution is handled by The Reserve Brands of Diageo plc. In 2007 Penka continues to be available in the UK.
In 2005 the New York Times who blindly tasted 21 world-class vodka, Smirnoff won "hand-fav".
In 2010, Smirnoff introduced the Cocktail Range. Pomegranate Martini with Meyer Lemon-flavored Liquor and pomegranate juice, Mojito with little mint and lime and Grand Cosmopolitan with cranberry juice. Tuscan Limun and Savannah Tea added later.
A study in 2013, shows that Smirnoff malt drinks are the second most popular second-brand alcoholic beverage consumed by underage teenagers in the United States. Malt smirnoff drink (17.0%, 95% CI 12.9 to 21.1%).
The latest addition is Smirnoff Sours vodkas, introduced in 2014. Available flavors are Fruit Punch, Watermelon, Green Apple, and Lemon Berry.
In 2016, Smirnoff introduced two new flavors of Smirnoff Ice: Electric Mandarin and Electric Berry. Also in 2016 Smirnoff introduces a new Spiked range, available in Original, Screwdriver, and Storm Blow, as well as their fruit juice sourced vodka, available in Ruby Red Grapefruit, Pineapple, and Apple Cranberry.

Smirnov vodka
Smirnov (Russian: ???????? ) can be seen as Russian version of Smirnoff vodka. It was created by Smirnov Trading House, a company that was part of a joint venture by Alfa Group of Russia and Diageo was founded in February 2006. The full title of Smirnov Trading House is The Trading House of the Heirs of P.A. Smirnov .
Smirnov vodka was launched in 1991 by Boris Smirnov, a descendant of Pyotr Smirnov, the original manufacturer of spirits. It was first labeled as "table wine" rather than vodka to avoid conflict with Smirnoff. After many lawsuits, resulting in the Diageo brand being banned temporarily at the Commonwealth of Independent States from 2002 to 2006, the Russian brand became the sister product of Smirnoff vodka.
The label includes 1860 (the year Pyotr Arseniy's father founded their first wine cellar in Moscow), rather than 1864 (the year Pyotr set up its first vodka refinery plant), as the date of incorporation. Their main brand Smirnov Titul had the year 1886 on the label, year P.A. Smirnov received the title "Purveyor to the Imperial Court" - making them the exclusive provider of vodka for the Tsar.
In 2017, Chrissy Teigen model starred in a video ad for Smirnoff vodka.
