The JPMorgan Chase Tower , formerly Texas Commerce Tower , is 305.4 meters (1,002-feet), 2,243,013-square-foot (208,382,7 m 2 ), a 75-story skyscraper at 600 Travis Street in Downtown Houston, Texas, United States. It is currently the tallest building in the city, the tallest building in Texas, the world's tallest five-sided buildings, the 18th tallest building in the United States, and the 107th tallest building in the world.

The tower was built between 1979 and 1981 as the Texas Trade Tower . It was designed by architects noting I. M. Pei & amp; Partners. In some initial plans, the building reached up to 80 floors; However, the FAA expressed concern that additional altitude is a risk for incoming and outgoing aircraft from nearby William P. Hobby Airport. However, when completed, it is the eighth highest building in the world. The building was developed as part of a partnership between Texas Commerce Bank and Khalid bin Mahfouz. Built on the site where Uptown Theater, destroyed in 1965, once stood.
Upon completion, the building surpassed the Aon Center in Los Angeles to become the tallest building in the United States west of the Mississippi River, a title held to the Los Angeles Library Tower, now known as the US Bank Tower, built in 1990.
JPMorgan Chase Tower is currently not connected to the Houston Downtown Tunnel System. The system forms a network of underground, climate-controlled sidewalks, a pedestrian path that connects twenty-five city-filled blocks. The JPMorgan Chase Tower lobby has been designed to harmonize not only the height of the structure but also with the Hall Hall foyer, home of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and which occupy city blocks soon to the west. For that reason, a five-story glass wall supported by a stainless steel frame chamber extends all 85 feet wide from the front door, creating a bright and airy lobby area, and opens space to the square outside. The tower also covers 22,000 square feet of space retail.
The sky lobby observation deck is located on the 60th floor. The sky lobby acts as a transfer point for people traveling upstairs (61-75), but also as an observation deck for tenant buildings. The sky lobby is now permanently closed to the public and can only be accessed by tenants. In the large plaza area at the entrance of the building is a multi-colored statue entitled "Personality with Birds", designed by painters and sculptors Joan MirÃÆ'ó, and which was installed in the square in early 1982.
While the name of the tower reflects the bank JPMorgan Chase, the only place designated for Chase is a single branch office downstairs. The tower is owned by Prime Asset Management and is managed by its original owner, Hines Interests.

Hurricane Ike
On September 13, 2008, many of the tower windows were destroyed as Hurricane Ike hit the city, leaving open tables, metal curtains suspended in knotted piles, and smoky black glass covering the streets below. Police were forced to close the area because of the large amount of debris on the streets.
Initially, it was speculated that the glass came from the building because of the impact of debris or because of high-speed wind in enclosed spaces. However, the flying glass debris must be completely regulated by tensile and lift forces that overcome gravity for long periods of time. Also, the theory of high speed in confined spaces is not fully justified because the height of damage seen in the tower exceeds too high from the Chase Center parking garage next to the tower. This theory is proposed because an increase in wind speed results in a decrease in external pressure. This pressure drop in the wind and sidewall, combined with higher normal pressure inside the building, will produce strengths that may overcome the design stresses that cause separate windows. Other theories include ABS Consulting Engineers, who suggest that glass breakage may have been produced by "organized" vortices produced by winds against Calpine Center and the stable vortices between the Tower and the Chase Center parking garage. NatHaz's Modeling Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame is currently investigating the flow of terrain around the structure, tower modeling and surrounding areas immediately using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Preliminary findings indicate that local damage is the result of meeting several mechanisms arising from the arrangement of nearby buildings, the direction of critical flow and the possibility of debris traps in evolving flow structures.
