Histori
The Hostess CupCake was first sold on May 11, 1919. According to author Andrew F. Smith, it was the first commercially produced cupcake, originally produced by Taggart Bakery as a Chocolate Cup Cake. The hostess also claimed that it was "the first snack cake ever introduced to the market." In 2004, rival Tastykake denied this claim, claiming that Tastykake introduced the first snack cake.
Initially, two cupcakes sold for five cents. Different flavors were offered during the early years, including topped cupcakes with vanilla or flavored milk malt icing. During the 1940s, an orange flavored cupcake was developed, with orange cake and icing. However until 1950, Hostess CupCake did not have a filling or a white line grooved on it.
In 1947, D.R. "Doc" Rice, who started her career at Hostess in 1938 with a job requiring dumping baked cookies on the table, was given the task of developing the Hostess CupCake further. This development culminated in an updated cupcake in 1950. A white line consisting of graffiti was added to the top to distinguish Hostess CupCake from other brands. The contents of vanilla creme are also added. Rice got the idea to use creme filling when a new machine to inject the fill into the Mistress Twinks became available. Improvements were also made to a mixture of chocolate cake and chocolate coating in 1950. According to Rice, the updated cupcakes were first produced and marketed in Detroit.
Other flavors of the Hostess cupcake that have been available at times have become golden (vanilla with brown sugar coating) and strawberries.
In 1988, 400 million Hostess Cupcakes were sold. In 2011, the Hostess sold over 600 million CupCakes annually. Although Hostess Brands went into bankruptcy protection in 2012, the company plans to continue making Cupcakes and other snack cakes such as Twinkies and Sno Balls. The plan was derailed by the company's liquidation and the announcement that it will be out of business on November 16, 2012. However, the company was eventually purchased by Apollo Global Management, which began selling Hostess products in July 2013.

Producing
The cookies are produced from dough that includes flour, sugar, cocoa and water. Baked in a tray for 17 minutes in a 70 foot (21 m) conveyor oven that can produce 11,000 cupcakes per hour. After cooling, the cake is injected through the top with vanilla creme, then brought by the conveyor to be covered on it with a brown sugar coating. After a special machine puts white icing in the signature streak, the cake is cooled and wrapped.
