Histori
The original product was made at Casa de Fritos (now Rancho Del Zocalo) at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, during the early 1960s. Using a tortilla surplus and taking on the original idea of ââa traditional Mexican snack known as totopo, the company's restaurant cut it, fried it, and added basic flavor, resembling a Mexican chilaquile, but in this case dry. Arch West was Frito-Lay's marketing vice president at the time, and paid attention to their popularity. He made a deal in 1964 with Alex Foods, a provider of many items for Casa de Fritos at Disneyland, and produced chips for a short period regionally, before being overwhelmed by volume, and Frito-Lay moved home production to his Tulsa plant.
"Doritos" was released nationally in 1966, the first nationally launched tortilla chip in the United States. The name is derived from the Spanish Spanish doradito , which means "golden brown." Can also come from Mexican-Spanish "doradito" which means "something fried" (in small form) like "dorar" means "frying"/"chocolate" in the cooking context.
According to International Information Resources, in 1993 Doritos made $ 1.2 billion in retail sales, one-third of Frito-Lay's total sales for the year. However, in the most expensive redesign in Frito-Lay history, in 1994 the company spent $ 50 million to redesign Doritos to make chips 20% bigger, 15% thinner, and round the edge of the chip. Roger J. Berdusco, vice president of tortilla chip marketing, said the main reason for the change was "greater competition from restaurant-style, larger and more powerful restaurant tortillas." Design changes are the result of a two-year market study involving 5,000 chip-eaters. The new design gives each round corner pieces, making it easier to eat and reducing the resulting pieces from damaged angles. Each piece is also given more seasoning, resulting in a stronger flavor. The redesigned chips were released in four flavors from January 1995.
In the United States, Frito-Lay eliminated trans fat from all Doritos varieties in 2002. That same year, the Doritos brand began to comply with the US Food and Drug Administration labeling regulations, four years before the regulation became mandatory.
The company was sued in 2003 by Charles Grady, who claimed that his throat had been damaged by eating Doritos. According to him, the shape and stiffness of the chip makes them very dangerous. Grady attempted to recognize being a testament to a study by a former chemistry professor who calculated the best way to swallow the chip safely. The Pennsylvania High Court then ruled that the study did not meet scientific standards and could not be presented as evidence.
In 2005, Doritos sales in the United States fell 1.7% to $ 595 million. To increase sales in 2006, the company launched several new flavors, new labels, and more bilingual ads. Frito-Lay's vice president Joe Ennen described this as "the most significant rebranding and relaunch in the 38-year history of Doritos."
On February 21, 2013, the Doritos logo was changed again, and the advertising slogan "FOR THE BOLD" was adopted.
In 2015, Doritos introduces a limited edition Rainbow Doritos product, available only to those who donate a minimum of $ 10 to It Gets Better Project, a non-profit organization that supports LGBT teenagers. The promotion earned $ 100,000 for the organization, and was greeted with controversy.

Flavors
Doritos are sold in many countries around the world in a variety of flavors. They were launched nationally in the United States in 1966, with just one flavor: corn roast. The product proved successful, but additional market research revealed that many consumers outside the Southwest and West thought the chip was too bland and not spicy enough for what was considered a Mexican snack. Frito-Lay therefore developed the Doritos flavored taco, which also became a success after being introduced nationally in 1967. The national distribution of nacho cheese-flavored Doritos began in 1972, and was also a hit. For the short term in the late 1970s, Sour Cream and Onion flavored Doritos were available, but stopped in the early 1980s. Chips of sesame seed flavor were also available for a short time in the late 1970s. In 1986, Cool Ranch Doritos made their debut and also became popular. Cool Ranch Doritos is sold under the name "Cool Original" in the UK and is called "Cool American" elsewhere in Europe, as ranch dressings are less common in those places.
In the 1990s, in partnership with PepsiCo's fast food brand parent company, two new flavors of Doritos were introduced, Taco Bell's Taco Supreme (combining "beef" flavors very different from the 1960s "Taco" incarnation) and Pizza Hut's Pizza. Cravers. After PepsiCo separated its restaurant divisions in 1997, the flavors were only converted into tacos and pizzas, respectively, with the taste of paused pizza in some markets. At about the same time, due to the popularity of the Tostitos Frito-Lay brand, the Uncooked Poultry Corn was briefly stopped, then brought back. In 2008, Taco Bell flavor was temporarily released under the label "Back by Popular Demand" along with Four Cheese.
In 1990, Jack Cheese Jumpin 'Jack Cheese flavor Doritos was introduced. The taste is then stopped. In 1995, Chester's Cheese Doritos was available for a limited time. This taste introduces familiar Cheetos cheese on a typical Doritos tortilla chip. In 1997, Spicy Nacho was introduced.
For a brief period in 2004, Doritos introduced new shapes and shapes called "Rollitos", which are corn chips formed into small tubes, like the ordinary triangle Dorito that is "rolled" upward. Flavors include Nacho Cheesier, Zesty Taco, Cooler Ranch, and Queso Picante. In 2013, this idea was reintroduced as "Dynamics", or a small dynamite stick. There are two varieties, a chili combo, and Mojo Criollo (Creole magic), lemon-lime and garlic fried by Doritos. The dynamics are slightly different in style than the Rollitos. Rollitos has baked chips, tubes formed with oil-submersible box presses for frying. Currently rolled into tubes before roasting and frying, a much simpler process.
Five versions of "Doritos Collisions", which includes two different flavors in the same bag, have been produced. The types of Doritos Collisions are Hot Wings/Blue Cheese, Zesty Taco/Chipotle Ranch, Habanero/Guacamole, Cheesy Enchiladas/Sour Cream, and Pizza Cravers/Ranch.
In 2007, Doritos run a campaign called "Doritos X-13D Flavor Experiment" in which unknown Doritos black bags are in the market for consumers to identify and name flavors. The only identification of flavors on this chip is "All American Classic".
Reincarnation and re-launching Doritos flavored tacos, including the 2008 "Back With Popular" campaign, are different from the original taco flavor (Sour cream flavor was added to the recipe around 1985). The taco chips included in the "Collisions" bag Zesty Taco and Chipotle Ranch are considered by customers to be closer to the original, but then discontinued in most of the United States. At the end of 2010 the recipe of taco flavor used in the 1980s was back in a limited edition "retro" bag that incorporated the original Doritos logo, and in early 2011 the company announced that this incarnation would remain in the permanent product line.
In 2008, Doritos debuted with a "mystery flavor" quest with prizes given when the puzzle was completed. His mysterious sense is Mountain Dew. In 2009, Doritos released several new flavors under the banners "Doritos Late Night": "Tacos at Midnight" and "Last Call JalapeÃÆ' à ± o Popper". They also modified the X-13D Flavor as an All Nighter Cheeseburger.
2010 saw the release of three spicy "Fuel Degrees" consecutive flavors (Blazin 'JalapeÃÆ'à ± o/JalapeÃÆ' à ± o Fire, Buffalo Fire and Habanero Scorchin'), a crosses promoted to "cool down" with Pepsi lime "Stop Fire/Max Citrus Freeze ", and wasabi flavored with Fire Dragon Chips Fire. 2010 saw the introduction of Doritos to New Zealand and with flavors including Nacho Cheese, Cheese Supreme, Salt, and Salsa. This year also saw the original taste of Taco Doritos revived in its original packaging design.
In the spring of 2011, the taste of hot Tapatio sauce was released. In February 2011, Doritos Canada ran a competition to write the end of an advertisement for two new flavors ("Onion Rings n 'Ketchup" and "Blazin' Buffalo and Ranch"), and to choose from two flavors to be taken off the shelf when the contest ended. Onion Rings n 'Ketchup receives the most votes and remains on sale.
In the spring of 2015, Doritos Roulette was released to the US market for a limited time. While all the chips look the same on the outside, one out of every six chips will be extra spicy. Due to the spicy nature of one variety contained in the package, in July 2015 a school in the UK reported an incident in which a student "had trouble breathing after eating one".
Marketing
This brand marketing campaign has included many television commercials featuring Avery Schreiber, Jay Leno, and Ali Landry, as well as product placements in movies, such as Wayne's World .
Super Bowl
Over the years, Doritos has been widely advertised during the Super Bowl. According to Thomas L. Harris Value-Added Public Relations , "the single most widely used video news release of 1995" is Doritos Super Bowl Commercial featuring the governor of the US state recently defeated by Mario Cuomo and Ann Richards. The couple is discussing the change and the ad ends with viewers aware that the changes they are referring to are not political, but a new pack for Doritos. The ad generated a lot of publicity before it ever went on and much discussion afterwards. The governors then parodied their advertisements; when they were interviewed on the CBS news program 60 Minutes , both were often seen eating Doritos.
In 1998, Doritos casted former Miss USA Ali Landry in a new Super Bowl Commercial. In the ad, filmed on Laundromat, he plays a sexy customer who captures Doritos chips in his mouth as they fly by helter-skelter. The ad was so successful that Frito-Lay signed Landry, later known as "The Doritos Girl," to a three-year contract.
For Super Bowl XLI, Doritos launched the contest, Crash the Super Bowl, to allow consumers to create their own Doritos ads. The general public is allowed to choose their favorites from the five finalists. According to Doritos, the vote was so close that just before the game, the company decided to run two ads instead of just one. Both ads were very high in the ad rankings during this Super Bowl. The following year, Doritos sponsored a contest to find a musician to be featured in a Super Bowl ad. Although the ad, which features the winner of Kina Grannis, generates a lot of publicity, this ad is ranked last in popularity among program ads.
For the Super Bowl XLIII, Doritos relaunches the ad made by fans, with the winning voice going into the "Free Doritos" ad, featuring an office worker (Comedian Steve Booth) with a snowball (believing it is a crystal ball) "predict" that everyone in the office will get a free Doritos, then throw a snowball into a vending machine that sells anything but Nacho Cheese & amp; Ranch Cool Doritos. This ad was rated by the USA Bowl Super Bowl Ad Screen as the best advertisement for the year, resulting in advertisers - Joe and Dave Herbert - a $ 1 million prize. They re-aired two ads during game ads and second place ads were also placed in the top five according to USA Today. The ad featured a man who discovered that every crisis from Doritos's bag caused whatever he had in mind to come true (until he ran out of chips). Other popular ads from the finalist group include an executive who makes a presentation to other executives about a new Doritos (fictitious) taste called "Doritos Beer", which, as the name implies, is a Doritos flavored beer, with each chip containing as much alcohol as the 16- oz. beer cans. The executive who made the presentation, ate the flavored beer chips, ended up drunk on the chips and got to his underwear and tie at the end of the ad. For the Super Bowl XLIV, four ads are included, and if three ads sweep the top three positions in the Ad Meter contest that year, all creators will earn a total of $ 5 million, divided into $ 1 million for first place, $ 600,000 for both and $ 400,000 for all three, plus each maker will earn an additional $ 1 million.
For the Super Bowl XLIII airing in Canada, Doritos airs the "Chip Hat" advertisement advertising a new "unknown" flavor of them offering a $ 25,000 1% CDN reward of all related sales to someone who can name, and create an ad for a new flavor. The name of the new winner, Scream Cheese (or, in French, Fromage Fracassant), was sent by Ryan Coopersmith from Montreal.
For the Super Bowl XLIV Doritos aired the "House Rule" ad, as the "Crash the Super Bowl" finalist. It was ranked by ADBOWL as the second best-selling advertisement this year.
For the Super Bowl XLVI, an advertisement aired featuring a Grandmother and a baby trying to get a Doritos bag with a wheelchair-activated catapult. The bag was stolen by a child, constantly teasing them in the process. The baby reaches the bag and steals it back with enough force to reach it. Flattering the child, Grandma and her baby ate Doritos with ease.
For the Super Bowl XLIX, the ad was about a father giving Doritos a bag to his son "when the pigs fly".
More
In 2008, Doritos was promoted by an "outside world" advertising campaign, literally emitting a 30-second advertisement for Doritos brand tortilla chips into a 42-light-year planetary system. The project is working with the EISCAT Space Center in Svalbard, Norway. The "You Make It, We Play It" contest chose a winning advertisement that was transmitted on June 12, 2008.
