Histori

Prior to European exploration and settlement in the 19th century, the Puget Sound region was populated by the indigenous Coast Salish. Stanwood's modern downtown site is home to the village of Stillaguamish named S? L-gwÃÆ'¤hs' , headed by Zis-aba's head, with an estimated 250 people and three large potlatch houses. George O. and G. L. Wilson were led by a canoe expedition on the River Stillaguamish by Samuel Hancock in 1851, becoming the first European Americans to explore the river.

Stanwood was first completed in 1866 by Robert Fulton and originally called "Centerville". The Stanwood Post Office was established as Centerville in 1870, and its name was changed to Stanwood in 1877 by D.O. Pearson after the name of his wife's girl. Stanwood was officially founded on October 19, 1903, and grew in the mouth of the River Stillaguamish a mile west of the 1891 Seattle-Montana Great Northern Railway tracks. East Stanwood (along the railroad) was installed in 1906 and was established in 1922. The two cities were consolidated in 1960.
