Squash (also known as friendly ), in English English, is a non-alcohol concentrated syrup used in the manufacture of beverages. Usually fruit-flavor, made from fruit juice, water, and sugar or sugar substitute. Modern pumpkins can also contain food colorings and flavor enhancements. Some traditional pumpkins contain herbal extracts, especially elderflower and ginger.

Drink

Squash is mixed with some water or soda water before drinking. The amount of water added is sufficient, with the pumpkin being less acid the more dilute. As a beverage mixer, this drink can be combined with an aperitif to prepare a cocktail.

Citrus fruits (especially oranges, limes and lemons) or fruit and fruit mixtures are commonly used as a base for pumpkins.

Traditional pumpkins are usually flavored with ginger, chokeberry (often with added flavor), elderflower, and sometimes orange or lemon.

Get started

Squash is prepared by combining one part of the concentrate with four or five parts water (carbonated or still). Double-strength flasks and traditional beverages, which are thicker, are made with two parts of the concentrate. Some squash concentrates are quite weak, and these are sometimes mixed with one part of the concentrate and two or three parts water.

Storage

Most cordials and squash contain preservatives such as potassium sorbate or (in traditional cordials) sulfites, as they are designed to be stored on a shelf. They are still good because of their high preservatives and sugar content. Nonetheless, some choose to store their pumpkins in the fridge.

Materials

Squash and cordial materials have evolved over the years. Traditional food contains three ingredients: sugar, juice or plant extract and a little water. It can usually contain acidifiers such as citric acid or very old-fashioned lemon juice, or even spices such as cinnamon or cloves. Recreation from these traditional preparations often contain preservatives, especially sulfur dioxide, although sugar alone will make it fresh for quite a long time. Modern pumpkin drinks are generally more complex and sugar-free pumpkin even more; the ingredients are usually water, sweeteners such as aspartame or sodium saccharin, low amounts of juice (usually 5-10 percent), large amounts of flavoring, preservatives and sometimes colors such as anthocyanins. In the middle is an ordinary pumpkin, which contains sugar, water, more juice, preservatives, dyes such as anthocyanin and often a bit of flavoring. Although colors like Allura Red AC and Sunset Yellow FCF are sometimes used in squash, most modern British companies are gradually aiming to use natural colors like beta carotene or anthocyanins, and natural flavorings.

Flavoring

Traditional squash can be flavored with elder flower, lemon, pomegranate, apple, strawberry, chokeberry (often with spices like cinnamon or added cloves), orange, pear, or raspberry.

Modern squashes usually have a simpler taste, such as oranges, apples, summer fruit (mixed fruit), blackcurrant, apple and blackcurrant, peach, pineapple, mango, lime, or lemon.

Terminology

Cordial, dilute juice, and squash are similar products, although the product known as cordials tends to be thicker and stronger, requiring less syrup and more water to be mixed. In English English, "friendly" refers to a sweet fruit flavored drink (different from syrup). "High juice" is not a pumpkin brand but a type that contains more juice, about 45%.

Squash is often colloquially known as "juice". But this term is a misnomer; without pumpkin is pure juice. Squash is usually called according to the fruit from which they are made. Less often, they may be called "fruit drinks", especially if they are readily diluted in plastic bottles or cardboard (for example, Fruit Shoot). It is also common for some people in the Northeast to refer to squash as "watery juice".

Fruit juice contents

Squash is measured by their juice level, the average is 30%. Various squashes containing more fruit juice, up to half or more of the volume in juice, are sold on the market as "high juice", and squash is often called "juice" when talking to children, especially these high-juice drinks, although this may be confusing. However, many squash contain less than 20% juice, and some only 5-10%. The latter is usually low in nutritional value, and high versions of juice are quite high in nutrients, although one drawback is that sugar is high and contains no fibers or minor nutrients. That goes with almost any pumpkin. A low juice flask may declare "with real fruit juice" on the label.

Squash low sugar

Pumpkin labeled "without added sugar" is an artificial sweetener, usually with aspartame, acesulfame K, saccharin or sucralose, which is much cheaper for producers than HFCS and natural sugar. They are very low in calories, sometimes having at least 4 per 100ml diluted, and they are marketed to families looking for low-calorie alternatives. They tend to be very low in fruit juice, as fruit juices contain natural sugars, so they usually also contain natural or artificial flavors (isoamyl acetate for pear or banana, or mixed with malic acid to make flavors like apples, ethyl methylphenylglycidate for strawberries, octyl acetate for oranges, allyl hexanoic for pineapples etc.) to make up for the lack of flavored fruit juice.

Animal consumption

Gorillas at the London Zoo were given pumpkin and cold fruit tea to drink. When a silverback called Kumbuka escapes from its cage in 2016, he drinks five liters (nine liters) of pure blackcurrant squash that is in the guard area.
