Usually, poffertjes is sweet food, served with sugar and butter powder, and sometimes syrup or advocaat. However, there is also a savory variant with gouda cheese.

Poffertjes is a lively holiday party in the Netherlands, popular in summer festivals and Christmas markets. Especially in winter while standing selling poffertjes is quite popular and sells parts containing one or two dozen of them. Usually the cook prepares it freshly for the customer. They are sold on small cardboard plates (sometimes plastic) and come with a small disposable fork the size of a cake fork. Poffertjes is not difficult to prepare, but a special cast iron pan or copper pan (also available in aluminum with Teflon coating) with some shallow grooves at the bottom is required.
Almost all Dutch supermarkets (such as Albert Heijn, Lidl & Jumbo) sell ready-made poffertjes that only need to be microwaved, and sold complete with sachet of powdered sugar and a small portion of butter. Supermarkets are also stock mixes for poffertjes, which only need to be added eggs and milk. Usually they contain several types of yeast agents such as baking powder.
Poffertjes can also be served with other sweet ornaments, such as syrup, whipped cream or strawberries, to add flavor.
Poffertjes is also known in Indonesian cuisine through its historical ties as a former Dutch colony.
