The Chow Chow (sometimes just Chow ) is a type of dog originating in northern China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan (Pinyin: s? ngsh? qu? n ???), which means "swollen dog-lion". This breed is also called Tang Quan , "Tang Empire Dog". It is believed that Chow Chow is one of the original dogs used as a model for the Foo dog, a traditional stone guard found in front of Buddhist temples and palaces. This is one of the few ancient dog breeds that still exist in today's world.

Histori

A writer has suggested that Chow Chow originated in China 2,000 years ago or originated in Arctic Asia 3,000 years ago and then migrated to Mongolia, Siberia and then to China. DNA analysis shows that Chow Chow is one of the ancient dog breeds.

Chow Chow may come from high grassland areas in Siberia or Mongolia, and many later used as temple guards in China, Mongolia and Tibet. A relief from 150 BC (during the Han Dynasty) included a hunting dog that was similar in appearance to Chow. Later Chow Chows were raised as general purpose dogs for herding, hunting, pulling and keeping. From what records survive, some historians believe that Chow was a dog described as a companion of the Mongols as they rushed south to China and also west to Europe and southwest to the Middle East in the 13th century.

One Chinese legend mentions a big war dog from Central Asia who looks like a black lion tongue. One Chinese ruler is said to have 5,000 Chows. The Chinese also use Chows to pull dog sleds, and this was stated by Marco Polo. Chow Chow is also bred for human consumption.

A legend says that the original teddy dolls were modeled after the Chow Chow Queen Victoria. It is said that he took the dog wherever he went. His friends disagree, claiming that it is inappropriate for a Queen to be seen everywhere with a dog, so they pay a tailor to make a puppet version for him.

Today, the AKC records about 10,000 Chow Chows a year. The Canadian Kennel Club records about 350.

Appearance

Chow Chow is a sturdy, square-shaped dog with a broad skull and small ears, a triangle, erect with rounded edges. This breed is known for its dense, coarse, or coarse double layers. The fur is very thick in the neck area, giving it a distinctive feather or feather look. The coat can be shaded/red-itself, black, blue, cinnamon/yellowish brown, or cream. Not all of these color varieties are recognized valid in all countries. Individuals with a patchwork or multicolored mantle are considered to be outside the breed standard. Chow Chow's eyes are usually deep and almond-shaped. This breed is distinguished by its unusual blue-black/purple tongue and its very straight back leg, resulting in a rather rigid gait. The bluish color extends to Chow Chow's lips; this is the only dog that breeds this typical bluish color on the lips and oral cavity (other dogs have black or striped skin in their mouths). One other characteristic is the curly tail. His hair is thick and lying on his back. The nose should be black, but the blue Chow Chow can have a blue nose or a solid slate. According to the standard of the American Kennel Club breeds, other tones are not acceptable for the contest. FCI countries, however, allow the colored nose themselves in the cream.

Blue-black/purple tongue genes appear dominant, as most of the mixed race dogs originating from Chow Chow maintain tongue color. However, the blue-black/purple tongue can also be found in Shar Pei. This is not to say that any dog race with purple spots on the tongue is derived from Chow Chow, because purple spots on the tongue can be found in other race dogs.

Temperament

Most often kept as pets, Chow Chows tend to display the wisdom of foreigners and can be the protector of their owners and property. However, the American Kennel Club standard, regard Chow Chow that is too aggressive or too tough is not acceptable. Therefore, some owners associate cat-like personalities with Chow Chow.

Chow Chow is not excessively active, meaning they can be placed in an apartment. However, Chow Chow who lives in the apartment will need daily practice to prevent anxiety and boredom. After realizing that sport is a daily occurrence, Chow Chow will tend to be more assertive with its owners in anticipating such activities.

This type of dog has many strong faithful ties to friends and family, but Chow Chow dogs are usually very protective of one or two main family members. It is hereditary to be calm and well-behaved, but also resistant to training. Chow Chows become very stubborn and stick to certain individuals as they get older. This is why training them when they are puppies is very important because they gain respect for those who care for them.

To avoid being aggressive and overprotective as adults, continuing socialization as early as possible may allow dogs to adapt. When Chow Chows have reached their teens, they reject the authority of other owners who fail to win their admiration. Aggression can be one of the characteristic behaviors peculiar to this breed, although some are aggressive, many of which are known to be easy in nature - sometimes adopting a lone disposition to individuals other than their owners. Aggression when it appears is often in the direction of other dogs of the same gender, especially Chows. Because of their strong hunting instinct, it is recommended that these dogs remain fenced, tied up, and away from cats and small dogs. This is why it is imperative that they are socialized early and consistently in order to act in accordance with foreigners. At first, chow chows are very hesitant in interacting with strangers. However, this problem can be avoided if the owner trains chow chow at a young age.

Having Chow Chow can raise the cost of homeowners insurance because some companies consider them high-risk dogs. In a study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Chow Chow was responsible for 8 of the 238 deaths associated with dog bites from 1979 to 1998.
