src: www.petful.com

The Pekingese (also known as Lion Dog , Peking Lion Dog , Pelchie Dog , or Peke ) is a kind of ancient toy dog, originating from China. They are called the Lion Dogs because of their resemblance to the Chinese guardian lion (Shih Tzu is also known as the Lion Dog in Chinese).

This breed is favored by the imperial palace royalty of China both as a lap dog and companion dog, and its name refers to the city of Peking (Beijing) where the Forbidden City is located. This breed has several characteristics and health problems associated with its unique appearance. Due to the desirable characteristics, Peking has become part of the development of crossbreed designers, such as Peekapoo (crossed with poodle) and Peke-a-tese (crossed with Maltese).

The Pekingese, originating from Western China, are the pride of Chinese Buddhist monks. These dogs are also found owned by the Chinese prince.

Description

Appearance

The proliferation of Peking is over 2000 years old and hardly ever changes during that time. One notable exception is that modern breeders and judges suggest dogs seem to prefer the long-haired type over the more traditional spaniel type coat.

The flat face and big eyes of the Pekingese are some of the most obvious descendants of their characteristics. The body is compact and low to the ground. Peking also has a muscular and durable body. The tremendous walking way of breeding may have been deliberately developed with nurseries to prevent a wandering court dog in ancient times.

Symbol

All breed standards allow different combinations of colors. The majority of Peking is gold, red or sable. Cream, black, white, sable, black and brown and sometimes 'blue' or gray slate have appeared on this breed. The latter often have bad pigments and light eyes. Albino Pekingese (white with pink eye) should be brought up cautiously because of the health problems that have been linked to albinism. The Peking people threw it away a lot.

Black mask or face the same color as acceptable dog. Regardless of the color of the fur, the skin is exposed from the muzzle, nose, lips and black eyes.

Size

Peking weighs 7-14 lb (3.2 to 6.4 kg) and stands about 6-9 inches (15-23 cm) in the withers, but can sometimes be smaller. This smaller Peking is usually referred to as the Peking "Arm" or simply "Arm". The name was taken from ancient times, when the emperor would bring the smallest of the descendants on their sleeves. Peking more than 15 pounds disqualified in the arena of the show.

Pekingese is slightly longer than the height when measured from the forechest to the buttocks. The overall outline is the approximate ratio of 3 high to 5 long.

Health

Pekingese has an average life span of 11.4 years in the UK Kennel Club survey. That's normal, but for them to live between 12 and 15 years.

The main cause of death for Peking, like for many other Toy breeds, is trauma. The main causes of organ systems include neurological and cardiovascular, eg, congestive heart failure. When diagnosed early and successfully treated with drugs, a Pekingese with this problem can expect to live for many years. A heart murmur is a sign of potential problems, and should be evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist. Very often, problems do not arise until the dog is 6 years or older, so it is very difficult to filter out problems in puppies.

Other major problems of heredity are eye problems and respiratory problems, resulting from small skulls and flat faces, and skin allergies (and hotspots). The most common problem is eye ulcers, which can develop spontaneously. Peking can also develop sicca keratoconjunctivitis (dry eye) and progressive retinal atrophy.

Peking people should not be kept outdoors, because their flattened faces and noses can cause them breathing problems, making it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature in too hot or cold weather. Their long backs, relative to their feet, make them vulnerable to back injuries. Care should be taken when taking them to provide adequate support to the back: one hand under the chest, the other under the belly. Short legs give Pekingese difficulties with stairs; older dogs may not be able to ascend or descend the stairs alone.

In an effort to overcome the difficulty of breathing caused by the flat face of the breed, Kennel Club (UK) significantly changed the breed standard in October 2008, removing the clause that "profile [should] be flat with a good nose between the eyes" and add that "muzzle must be clear". This was in response to public opinion after the BBC's Pedigree Dogs Exposed program. Standard breeds of two other flat-faced breeds, Pug and English Bulldog, also soon changed.

Cares

Maintaining a healthy and neat Peking coat requires daily brushing, and a trip to the groom every 8-12 weeks. One important thing for new owners to keep in mind is that dogs that are meant as pets can be kept in pieces of puppies that require less maintenance than haircuts. It is also important to remove foreign objects from the eyes every day, and wrinkles on the face to prevent injuries (hot spots). It is also necessary to maintain and maintain the feathers on the ass of clean and well-kept Peking people because the area is susceptible to dirt.

Because of the many feathers, it is important to keep Peking cool. The breed tends to have heatstroke when exposed to high temperatures for long periods.

History

This breed came from China in antiquity. Recent DNA analysis confirms that the Pekingese breed is one of the oldest dog breeds, one of the most genetically different from wolves. For centuries, they could only be owned by members of the Imperial Palace of China.

During the Second Opium War, in 1860, the Old Summer Palace in Beijing was occupied by a contingent of British and French troops. Emperor Xianfeng had fled with all his castles to Chengde. However, an elderly aunt of the emperor remained. When British and French troops entered, he committed suicide. He was found with five of his Pekingese. They were removed by the Allies before the Summer Palace was burned down.

Lord John Hay took a pair, then called Schloff and Hytien, and gave it to his sister, Duchess of Wellington, wife of Henry Wellesley, Duke of Wellington to-3. Sir George Fitzroy took another pair, and gave it to his cousin, Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Gordon. Lieutenant Dunne presented the fifth Peking to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, who named it Looty .

The Emperor Cixi's widow presents Peking to several Americans, including John Pierpont Morgan and Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, who named it Manchu .

The first Pekingese in Ireland was introduced by Dr. Heuston. He set up a smallpox vaccination clinic in China. The effect is dramatic. As a thank you, Chinese minister Li Hongzhang gave him a pair of Peking. They are named Chang and Lady Li . Heuston founded the Greystones kennel.

Around the turn of the century, Peking dogs became popular in Western countries. They are owned by fashion actors such as Alexandra of Denmark (Edward VII's wife), and Elsie de Wolfe, a popular American interior decorator.

Quotation

His Majesty the Emperor, Queen Cixi, (1835 - 1908) said:

Let the Lion Dog be small; let him wear his swollen robe on his neck; let him display the steaming standard piling up on his back.
Let the face be black; let the forehead be shaggy; let the forehead straight and low.
Let his eyes be big and radiant; let his ears be arranged like war screens of war; let his nose like that from a Hindu monkey god.
Let the front legs be bent; so do not want to wander far, or leave the imperial area.
Let her body look like a hunting lion that spies on its prey.
Let her legs fray with abundant hair so that the carcass may be silent and because the standard of splendor lets it rival the Tibetan yak, which thrives to protect the royal garbage from flying insects.
Let it live so as to produce entertainment with its gambol; be afraid that it may not engage in danger; let it be domestic in its custom that it may live in affection with other beasts, fish or birds that find refuge in the Imperial Palace.
And for the color, leave it from the lion - a golden sable, to be carried in the sleeve of a yellow robe; or the color of a red bear, or a black and white bear, or a strip like a dragon, so there may be a suitable dog for every costume in Imperial closet.
Let it glorify its ancestors and save the offerings at the dog cemetery from the Forbidden City on each new month.
Let him adjust to dignity; let him learn to bite the foreign demon instantly.
Let it be so beautiful in its diet that it will be known as the Imperial dog because of its fast nature; shark fins and curly worms and quail breasts, these may be fed; and to be drunk, give tea brewed from spring shoots from a bush growing in Hankow province, or antelope milk grazing in Imperial gardens.
Thus must maintain integrity and self-esteem; and for the sick day let it be anointed with clarified fat from the foot of the leopard, and give it to drink a throstle shell filled with apple custard juice that has dissolved three pinching pined hooks and apply it to a piebald leech.
So it will remain - but if you die, remember you too mortal man.

Legends

There are two stories of origin for the people of Peking. The first is the most common, The Lion and the Marmoset:

A lion and a marmoset are in love. But the lion is too big. The lion went to the Buddha and told him of his misery. The Buddha allowed the lion to shrink to the size of the marmoset. And Peking is the result.

The second, less common story, comes from The Butterfly Lions:

The lion falls in love with a butterfly. But butterflies and lions know the size difference is too much to overcome. Together they went to the Buddha, who let their size meet in the middle. From here, the people of Peking come.

Another legend says that this breed resulted from the marriage of a lion and a monkey, gaining its nobleness and coat from the previous one and walking awkwardly from the last.

Since the Pekingese are believed to have originated from the Buddha, he is a temple dog. Thus, he is not a toy. He is made small so that he can go after and destroy the little devils that may occupy the palace or temple. But his heart is so great that he can destroy even the biggest and the most vicious. (Barbara Hambly's novel,
of the Rat God , is written from this premise, though Hambly denies knowledge of the legend.)
