Dachshund Racing , or wiener dog racing , is a popular but controversial sporting event, especially found in North America. The typical Dachshund race is 25 or 50 meters in length, and runs on various surfaces. Many race tracks across America host these events as a fundraising or publicity event, and routinely attract the largest attendance attendance this year.

In less formal events, most migrants are not career racers, or raised for racing. Often, the dog will choose not to run all the way and visit another dog or owner who releases it. Otherwise, the dog will run quickly to the owner at the finish line, be seduced by food or toys.

The de facto national championship of wiener dog racing is the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, held in San Diego, California, every December as part of the Holiday Bowl; However, there are many other places that claim a true "national" champion title.

Criticism

While some compare sports to England and then American Greyhound racing, others see it as cruel and risky. Racing can filter out the spine of dogs, and some suspect that sport can cause racing animal abuse.

The Dachshund Club of America is against the dachshund race, because this breed has a genetic predisposition for back injuries.

History

Dachshund racing was first held in Australia in the 1970s. The initial meeting featured Whippet, Afghan Hound, and Dachshund racing, purely for fun. UC Davis Veterinary Faculty in California hosts the annual Doxie Derby as part of a university Picnic Day event. For more than 30 years, the race has been a fundraiser for veterinary students.

The sport is increasingly popular in North America after the 1993 TV Miller Lite commercial that enrolled strange sports, and continued to evolve after the release of the Wiener Takes All a documentary film that captured the Wiener Nationals two-year circuit. In 2009, Wiener Dog Nationals in Fort Wayne, Indiana, held the 16th annual Dachshund race. Zeus, the Germanfest champion from 2006-2009, is generally recognized as the greatest racing dachshund of all time. Germantown, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis, also hosts 'Run of the Wienies' for charity.

In 2016, the town of Bungendore in New South Wales, Australia held the inaugural Werriwa Wiener Dash to raise funds for Dachshund Rescue Australia. On January 29, 2017, the second Wiener Dash Werriwa held a record for most dachshunds in one place outside the dog show with 154 dachshunds in attendance.
