When the Maysville Syrup Company in Maysville, Kentucky went bust in 1917, L.D. Paring and other investment entrepreneurs moved the company to North Carolina and named it Carolina Corporation Beverage. That same year, Peeler bought a recipe for cherry flavored soda from a Saint Louis flavor seller, who eventually became Cheerwine. Although it has been around since 1917, Cheerwine first became a registered trademark in 1926.

The cheerwine has a rather sweet taste with strong cherries, especially the black cherries; burgundy color; and has a very high carbonation rate compared to other soft drinks. The product is named because of its color and taste; the company's website states that "it makes sense to name the red burgundy red-cheese cherry, bubbly, - Cheerwine." The "Retro Cheerwine" variant is sold in glass bottles and sweetened with cane sugar in lieu of high fructose corn syrup. Despite its name, Cheerwine is not actually a wine and does not contain alcohol.
The company also markets the Cheerwine ice cream flavor, sherbet, and cream, especially at Food Lion, Salisbury, a chain of supermarkets based in NC. The commercially baked Cheerwine cake, based on ancient Southern recipes, is available through a Salisbury-based company in 2008.
