Write and record

After being denied "28 times by every major label on Earth," Atco Records representative Mark Ross was asked by his boss, Derek Shulman (who was interested to sign it), to see the band perform after Hurricane Hugo stranded him in Texas. Ross was very impressed with the appearance of the band he called his boss that night, indicating that Pantera had to sign a contract with the label.

Ross on show:

"At the end of the first song, my jaws are on the floor. The sonic power of all that - attitude and music - makes me fascinated. You basically have to be idiots not to think they are amazing. this and do not think, 'Dammit!'? "

Atco Records was accepted but the band had to wait a period of six months before they started recording. They began recording at Pantego Sound Studio in Pantego, Texas from February 1990 and completed a record two months later. The band adopted new sounds and attitudes, and what writing would be the Cowboys from Hell saw the band exploring darker subjects, while the guitar would be heavier, though sometimes back to the metal hair formula. The band recorded Cowboys from Hell: The Demos , a self-produced album demo featuring 11 songs, 10 of which will make the album cut. The last two songs to be written are "Clash With Reality" and "Primal Concrete Sledge", while the song titled "The Will to Survive" will be discarded early in the recording session.

The band felt confident about their material and themselves, eventually feeling that they were making the kind of album they believed. One of the main lines that emerged during the writing was "Cemetery Gates", a seven-minute power ballad that would be the first song to show the diversity and range of Anselmo vocals. Although they've recorded four albums before Cowboys from Hell , Pantera feel that this is their true debut, working with professional producers and big labels for the first time and creating music that not only stole from other similar bands in an effort to attract attention.

Art cover

The cover art describes the band in an ancient western saloon. In fact, it is a 1910 photo of "Cosmopolitan Saloon" in Telluride, Colorado. Dimebag Darrell is portrayed in the middle of playing the guitar, while Vinnie Paul is eating his sandwich, Rex Brown leaning on the counter table and Phil Anselmo is shown jumping in the air to Brown's left. Anselmo stated that he jumped from a barstool to float high in the air. He also said that it took him about ten times until the cameraman got a shot into the desired style.

Critical reception

The album has been praised by most critics as it will prove to be one of the most influential albums in the metal scene in the 1990s and all time, and will inspire a generation of musicians, especially guitarists. IGN named Cowboys from Hell , the most influential 19th heavy metal album of all time.

They say about the album:

Along with the Vulgar Display of Power , Pantera's fifth album was not only considered one of the best bands, but also one of the decisive albums in the early 90s. Chemical band actually started the gel with collective symmetry here, as pre-Dimebag Darrell (he was known as Diamond Darrell back then) tore his ax rope like a rabid weasel, frontman Phil Anselmo following the type with a chaotic vocal vocal, and the rhythm section of Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown keeps the rhythm in check and the whole mess is glued together with low strength.

AllMusic mengatakan tentang album:

Pantera's breakthrough album, Cowboys from Hell , was largely driven by a strong band's rhythm section and the amazingly powerful Darrell (s) riddleing guitarist, who swirled around the downbeats to produce an unexpected rhythm phrase and accent, as well as his creative solos.
