Cocoa Puffs is a chocolate flavored breakfast cereal brand, produced by General Mills. Introduced in 1958, cereal consists of small balls of corn, wheat, and rice flavored with chocolate. Basically, Cocoa Puffs is a Kix cereal with chocolate spice; similarly, Trix has, for most of its existence, Kix flavored fruit.

Materials

On several occasions, the boxes of Cocoa Puff state that they are made with real Hershey chocolate.

In December 2009, General Mills announced that they would cut sugar in 10 cereals including the Cocoa Puff to less than 10 grams of sugar per serving. This could represent a 25% reduction in sugar content from the original level and 18% from the 2009 level of 11 grams per serving.

Flavors and variants

A cake of Cocoa Puffs has been made. A sweetened condensed milk coating is added to the bottom, and is marketed as a substitute for a bowl of milk and cereal.

A new addition was introduced in the summer of 2008, Cocoa Puffs Combos, which consists of chocolate puffs that are recognizable with vanilla puffs. Unlike the original Cocoa Puff, Combo cereal contains no cocoa; on the contrary, it contains an artificial cocoa.

In addition to Cocoa Puffs Combos, there are popular cereal varieties. One example is Cocoa Puffs Brownie Crunch in 2011. The cereal was described on the front of the box as "a box of natural sweet chocolate and artificial flavor."

Cocoa Puffs Mascot is Sonny the Cuckoo Bird, introduced in 1962. In television commercials, Sonny tries to concentrate on normal tasks but eventually finds some references about his own Cocoa Puff (usually explained by the adjective "munchy, crunchy, chocolatey") and bursts with enthusiasm, exclaiming his slogan, "I'm a cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!" Sonny was voiced by Chuck McCann from 1962 to 1978, and has been voiced by Larry Kenney since 1978.

Sonny's name comes from the original format of the ad, where he is paired with his grandfather (also voiced by McCann). Instead of the right names, they always refer to each other as "Gramps" and "Sonny." When the grandfather was dropped from the ad, "Sonny" remained as the character's name. In 2010, Grandpa returned to the Puff Kakao ads, with McCann repeating his role as Gramps and Kenney continued to voice Sonny.

Sonny was designed by Gene Cleaves; animated pioneer "Grim" Natwick, from the history of Betty Boop Fleischers, also contributed to the early images of Sonny and Gramps, according to the then-contemporary who collaborated with Natwick for 100 years of his career. Sonny was originally portrayed in a pink and white striped shirt, then in 1995 redesigned, this time wearing "extreme" clothing in the 1990s and given a more Disney-esque appearance. In 2004, it was redesigned in a simpler way, this time naked.
