United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, bar work is often not considered a long-term profession (unless the bartender is also a landlord), but more often as a second job, or transition work for students to gain customer experience or to save money on university fees. As such, it has no traditional job protection and therefore has a high turnover. The high turnover of staff due to low wages and poor employment benefits resulted in a lack of skilled bartenders. While a career bartender will know drink recipes, serving techniques, alcohol content, correct gas mixtures and licensing laws and often have good connections with regular customers, short-term staff may not have these skills. Some pubs prefer experienced staff, although pub chains tend to receive inexperienced staff and provide training.
The bartender eradication in the UK is not common, is not considered mandatory but highly appreciated by the bartender. The right way to tip a bartender in the UK is to say 'have one for yourself', encourage the bartender to buy drinks on his own, where the bartender may choose to add a small amount to the bill to take cash at the end of the shift they.
