The Tequila Sunrise is a cocktail made from tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup and served not mixed in tall glasses. The modern drink comes from Sausalito in the early 1970s, after being previously made in the 1930s in Phoenix, near Scottsdale. Cocktails are named for their appearance when presented, with gradations of colors resembling the rising sun.

History
The original Tequila Sunrise contains tequila, crème de cassis, lime juice and soda water and served at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, where it was created by Gene Sulit in the 1930s or 1940s.
The more popular modern version of the cocktail contains tequila, orange juice, and grenadine and was created by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the early 1970s while working as a young bartender at Trident in Sausalito, California north of San Francisco. In 1972, at a private party at Trident organized by Bill Graham to start the 1972 Rolling Stones tour of America, Mick Jagger had one of his cocktails, loved it, and he and his entourage began to drink it. They then ordered them throughout America, even their own dubbing tour "cocaine and tequila tour of the rising sun".
At that time, Trident was the largest outlet for tequila in the United States, and in 1973 Jose Cuervo took a new drink as a marketing opportunity and put the recipe for a new drink behind their tequila bottle, and promoted it in other ways. Later that same year, Eagles recorded a song titled Tequila Sunrise for their Desperado album because his drink was soaring in popularity.

Preparation and presentation
The Tequila Sunrise is considered a long drink and is usually served in collins or high ball glasses. The International Bartender Association has set this cocktail as the IBA Official Cocktail.
Drinks are mixed with Tequila pour, ice, then juice and, lastly, syrup. The signature display of a drink depends on adding syrup without mixing with other ingredients. Spoons can be used to guide the syrup down the glass wall to the bottom of the glass with minimal mixing.
