Tang is a fruit flavored drink. It was formulated by General Foods Corporation food scientist William A. Mitchell in 1957, and first marketed in powder form in 1959. The Tang brand is owned by Mondel? Z International, which was once part of Kraft Foods.

Tang sales were bad until NASA used it on Mercury John Glenn flights in February 1962, and the next Gemini mission. Since then, it has been closely linked to the US manned spaceflight program, leading to a misconception that Tang was created for the space program.

History

Tang is used by early NASA manned space flight. In 1962, when Mercury astronaut John Glenn conducted a feeding experiment in orbit, Tang was selected for the menu; it was also used for several Gemini flights, and has also been carried out on various shuttle missions. Although many soda companies deliver specially-designed drinks into space with STS-51-F crews, the crew prefers to use Tang, as they can be mixed into existing water containers with ease. In 2013, former NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin said "Tang sucks."

The Tang Creator, William A. Mitchell, also invented Pop Rocks, Cool Whip, Jell-O instant-set form, and other comfort foods.

Tang is best known for their ads in the 1990s and early 2000s that feature orangutans as a recurring theme.

Other versions

In 2007, Kraft introduced a new version of Tang that replaced half the sugar with artificial sweeteners. New packaging advertises "1/2 sugar juice 100%". Artificial sweeteners used in the new formulations are sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and neotame. The new formula is more concentrated and distributed in smaller containers, with 12.3 AS flÃ, oz (360Ã, ml) (348Ã, g (12,3Ã, oz)) making 8 US quarts (7,600Ã, ml).

The recommended use is two and a half teaspoons per 8 ounces of US (240 ml) water fluid. The lid on a new small plastic container acts as a measuring cup that can be used to make one or two quarts, just like the original Tang.

In December 2009, US $ 12.3 million (360 million) lower calories were discontinued and no longer available from Kraft.

In 2009, another Tang version appeared in 20 containers of US $ fla oz (590 m) which only produced 6 US quarts (5,700 ml).

Economy

Tang has had huge economic growth since 1957 and is sold worldwide. It has been sold by Mondelez International in 2017; across the Middle East, more than half of Tang's annual sales took place in just six weeks around Ramadan where many families gather for dinner or events with a variety of Tang food and drinks. Tang is bought in about thirty-five different countries around the world and is available in different flavors depending on where it is actually purchased.

In June 2011, Kraft Foods announced that Tang has become the twelfth brand of twelve dollars, with global sales nearly doubling since 2006 and how the international Tang market is pushing hard for their sales. Although Tang sales do not come close to Coca-Cola and soda and other vitamin sales, they still get a good income. Brands in 2010 dominated the best category of 15.6% of the international powder concentrate market.
