Its headquarters are in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The stores are located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and northeastern and north-central North Carolina.
Sheetz has long been using "Z" whose name ends with, and "Sh" whose name begins with, in various marketing efforts. Histori
1950s-1980s
Sheetz, Inc. was founded by G. Robert "Bob" Sheetz in 1952 when he bought one of his dad's five dairy shops located in Altoona. In 1961, Bob hired his brother Steve to work part-time at the store.
In 1963, the second store opened under the name "Sheetz Kwik Shopper." The third store was followed in 1968. In 1969, Steve worked full-time as a general manager. The brothers plan to expand at a storefront level per year with a target of seven stores in 1972. In 1972, the company expanded seven to fourteen stores. One year later, Sheetz began selling gasoline, and opened the first self-serve gas pump in central Pennsylvania.
In 1983, Bob and Steve had opened 100 stores. The following year, Bob retired, and Steve became president.
1990s
In 1995, Stanton R. "Stan" Sheetz, Bob's son, became president and Steve took up the position of Chairman of the Board. To this day, Sheetz maintains a family business with four family members serving on the Executive Committee.
During the mid-1990s, Sheetz also sold it! Cola, a branded branded branded beverage label available in cans, bottles, and fountain drinks. The drink was stopped and the fountain was replaced with Pepsi products. The chain now has Pepsi and Coca-Cola products in the fountain.
2000s
In September 2001, Sheetz opened a distribution center in Claysburg, Pennsylvania. The first shipment of this facility is bottled water and supplies for first responders in New York City and at the Pentagon following the terrorist attacks on September 11.
In 2003, Sheetz opened a draft store at the Hanes Mall food court in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This location offers Sheetz made-to-order food and fountain drinks in a more traditional fast food setting; it does not work as a department store. The store has closed.
In December 2004 they began offering a new Sheetz MasterCard PayPass with RFID technology built into the card, and was one of the first retailers of any sector to receive the technology, before McDonald's, Arby's, CVS, and 7-Eleven rivals, all of which launched nationwide in 2006.
On July 10, 2006, Sheetz became the second retail chain in Pennsylvania to offer ethanol-based ethanol fuel alternatives at selected stations.
In 2008, Sheetz opened her first cake shop, Sheetz Bros. Kitchen, to produce fresh sandwiches and bakery products which are then sold at the Sheetz location.
2010s
Sheetz now has more than 600 locations in six states - Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina - and more than 17,000 employees. All Sheetz stores are owned and operated by the company. The company has no plans to sell the franchise.
In 2012, Sheetz opened a fitness and wellness center for employees in Claysburg, Pennsylvania, called Centerz Center for Shwellness. The building is LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The first building to reach the Gold standard in LEED certification in Blair County.
In October 2013, Stan Sheetz became Chair of the Sheetz Council, with his cousin Joseph S. "Joe" Sheetz being president and CEO.
Published in November 2013, Kenneth Womack's Made to Order: The Sheetz Story traces the company's history from the origins of its dairy store to the present day.
Sheetz opened a second distribution center and commissioner in Burlington, North Carolina (2014).

Food service
Sheetz begins with the name "MTO" their signature, which stands for "Made To Order." In 1999, Sheetz sold 10,000 MTO units per day. Sheetz now trains employees to function as a barista for their latest brand "Sheetz Bros. Coffeez", which is designed to be a coffee of a higher level than is typically found in department stores. With the introduction of the concept of "Convenience Restaurant", they have expanded their menu. Customers can buy custom-made sandwiches and hot dogs, as well as pizzas, burritos, breakfast items, salads, and chili. French fries, chicken pieces, and other fried appetizers are available in all locations. The Espresso Bar, which offers specialty coffee, is also available in all locations. During 2008-2009, Sheetz launched "MTGo!", Grab and go assorted sandwiches, wraps and other small items to customers in a hurry. Together with "MTGo!" Sheetz launches "Shweetz Bakery" items including donuts, fries and muffins all made and delivered daily from the new "Sheetz Bros. Kitchen" in Claysburg, Pennsylvania.
Sheetz regularly offers customers free coffee on Christmas and New Year's.
Alcohol sales in Pennsylvania
Sheetz led the effort in an effort to amend the alcohol sales legislation in Pennsylvania to allow sales in stores. Under Pennsylvania state laws, alcohol can not be sold at department stores (beer should be sold to beer distributors while liquor should be sold at state-operated stores entitled "Wines & Spirits"). In 2007, Sheetz tried to find a gap around this by grouping parts of one of his prototype stores in Altoona as a restaurant, which would allow the sale of alcohol. However, the Association of Beverage Distributors Malt Pennsylvania protests and Sheetz is temporarily barred from selling beer. On appeal, Sheetz was awarded a license to sell beer and continues to do so today. On June 15, 2009, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court granted Sheetz permission to sell beer to take home on condition that it was also available for drinking on site.
Fuel
Most Sheetz stores sell gasoline, which features three classes of gasoline (octants 87, 89, and 92/93), mostly offering kerosene, and many offer diesel. Many of Sheetz's locations have started offering E85. Some stores also started offering E15. The only Sheetz store that does not sell gasoline is located in Morgantown, West Virginia at the new University of Residence at University of West Virginia and in State College, Pennsylvania next to Penn State University; and a small cafe shop in Indiana, Pennsylvania, next to Indiana University of Pennsylvania and in Charlottesville, Virginia.
