Plot
Donald Sinclair, the eccentric owner of The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, designed a new game to entertain the high craze who visited his hotel. Six custom tokens were placed in casino slot machines, and the winners were told that $ 2 million in cash was hidden in a backpack at a railroad station locker in Silver City, New Mexico, 563 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Each team was given a key to a locker and told to race to the train station to claim money. Unbeknownst to competitors, wealthy customers Sinclair places a bet on who will win. The visitors continued to make smaller bets throughout the film, facilitated by Sinclair's assistant Grisham, who at one point hired companions as part of the brave.
Among the racers are the siblings conspiring Duane and Blaine Cody, businesswoman Merrill Jennings and her estranged mother, Vera, American football referee Owen Templeton, the Pear family led by Randy's opportunistic father, the eccentric Italian tourist Enrico Pollini, and Nick Schaffer without further ado.
Unable to get the earliest flight, Duane and Blaine successfully destroyed the airport radar with their Ford Bronco, basing others. But their vehicle was damaged in sabotage, so they stole another. The brothers decided to split up and make replica keys to double their chances of winning. Locksmiths listen to their plans and make keys with hot air balloons. Duane and Blaine followed him, leaving the locksmith and dairy cow hanging on the balloon anchor rope. The brothers then stole the monster truck and went on to Silver City.
Merrill and Vera crashed their car after being given dangerous road directions. They stole a rocket car, which crossed the desert until it ran out of fuel. The women with dizziness stumbled onto a bus full of psychiatric patients who eventually moved toward Silver City.
Owen disguised himself as a bus driver full of Lucille Ball impersonators who will attend the I Love Lucy convention. Outside Silver City, the bus hit a cow hanging in a hot air balloon and turned off the road. Owen has an emotional disturbance, revealing he is not a bus driver, and is forced to flee from women on foot. Owen finally rode the stolen horse to Silver City.
Randy Pear tricked his family to accompany him in the race, stating that it was a business trip. The family mistakenly visited the museum dedicated to Nazi Klaus Barbie. After Cody's brothers damaged their vehicle, Pir stole Adolf Hitler's staff car to continue. Randy refused to end the journey when his family was tired of traveling. He finally told them about $ 2 million, and they were initially excited. However, as his family insisted on ending the journey again, he drank it with sleeping pills and bundled it into a semi-truck to reach Silver City.
Nick chose not to participate in the race until he met the pilot Tracy Faucet, who gave him the advantage of being one of the few who could still fly, using his non-fixed wing helicopter. The helicopter stalls after Tracy used it to attack her cheating girlfriend. Both then stole his truck to continue the race.
Narcoleptic Enrico fell asleep early in the race and only awoke a few hours later. He received a ride from an ambulance driver, Zack, who sent a transplant heart to El Paso. Enrico finally boarded the train to Silver City.
The racers reunited in Silver City and handled each other to open the lockers, only to find them empty. Outside, they find Sinclair's assistant, Grisham, and a call girl hired in a money bag. They lost it when a locksmith tied it to a balloon, just for three people crashing their car.
The drivers follow balloons to land at an outdoor charity concert organized by Smash Mouth. The band and the audience thought the money was a donation, and once they saw the spirit of the good deeds they made, the group was persuaded to accept. Nick surprised Sinclair the horror and his customers by telling the audience that the gamblers would match the amount of money already collected. The racers danced to the "All Star" while Sinclair was crying.

Production
Pre production
Rat Race was originally written by Darryl Quarles as a specific script. In February 1999, the script was sold to Hollywood Pictures and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In August 1999, Jerry Zucker was negotiating to direct the movie for Paramount Pictures, with a script written by Andy Breckman to be installed in Las Vegas, Nevada and in New Mexico.
Paramount hopes to start production in late 1999 or early 2000. Jerry and Janet Zucker will produce the film, along with Sean Daniel, while Daniel's partner in Alphaville Films, James Jacks, will act as executive producer. The filmmaker was originally thought to have a racing film character from Las Vegas, Nevada to Las Vegas, New Mexico, but the idea was rejected because of fears that it might be confusing to viewers.
In January 2000, Las Vegas, Nevada was confirmed as the filming location for Rat Race . Location scouting in southern Nevada was scheduled for May 2000, when filming in the area was delayed until the fall of 2000, to avoid filming in a hundred-degree weather. Breckin Meyer and Amy Smart were elected in June 2000. Dean Cain also became one of the actors to join the cast. Actor John Cleese praised the script as one of two scripts during his career that he enjoyed: "It's so unusual to get an upscale script. Two times in my life I have the experience of reading scripts and just saying, 'I'll do this.'"
Filming
Films began in Calgary in Canada in August 2000. Filming took place along Calgary highway, which stands on the highway that passes through figures in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Desert scenes shot in the city of Drumheller in Canada. The filming of the second unit began in Las Vegas on August 7, 2000, with scenes that mainly involved Cuba Gooding Jr.. Scheduled filming locations include the Las Vegas Strip, Tropicana Avenue (east of the Las Vegas Strip), McCarran International Airport, and Nevada State Route 159 Other unscheduled filming locations in Nevada including Goodsprings and Sandy Valley.
The scene involving Gooding and Lucy's impersonator group was shot in the Canadian Rockies. Jerry Zucker, who has a tradition including his mother Charlotte Zucker in every movie that starts with Airplane! , making her portray one of Lucy's impersonators. Jerry Zucker said, "It's like Alfred Hitchcock's signature, rather than mine." Filming also took place at the Currie Barracks military headquarters in Calgary, which has been changed to accommodate film and television production.
The sound stages are built inside two hangar planes at the base that will be used for many movie interior scenes, including Venetian hotel rooms and conference rooms. Driving scenes, using green screens and rear projection effects, are also shot in the hangar. The scene with a toss of a coin by Owen Templeton was filmed at Calgary McMahon Stadium.
Filming back to Las Vegas for a nine-day period starting September 20, 2000, with the first three days spent at McCarran International Airport, before moving to the Venice resort on the Las Vegas Strip for a six-day shoot. The Venice official negotiated with Paramount for six months to use the resort in the film. The scene was shot across the Venetian, with the exception of his hotel room. The Venetian scene includes a casino, lobby and entrance to the valet parking garage, as well as photos of the resort's exterior. About 1,000 additional backgrounds are required during the second shoot in Las Vegas. On September 25, 2000, a second unit shoot took place along Nevada State Route 161, leading to Goodsprings.
The filming in Las Vegas ended on September 29, 2000, and production was moved to Ely, Nevada, which stood as Silver City, New Mexico. Ely's Nevada Northern Railway Museum stands as Silver City railway station. According to the Nevada Film Office, filmmakers "fell in love" with the museum after being shown the photos. As a result, the initial two-day filming at Ely was extended to six days. The west entrance of Ely, accessed from Route 50 USA, is used as the entrance to Silver City.
Having ended up in Ely, the production crew moved to southern California during the last six weeks of filming, especially for the exterior scene. Filming in California mainly takes place in Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Acton, Santa Clarita, and Newhall. Rosamond, California is also a premier location, with filming for a three-week period in October 2000. The Smart helicopter scene was filmed at 3118 Carnation Street in Rosamond. Additional film making in California takes place at Big Sky Ranch and El Mirage Lake.
Sinclair and the eccentric habits of gamblers are increasingly exaggerated in the deleted scene, where they take part in many stupid bets, including playing Monopoly with real money. In another scene, a high lover pretends to discover what they are doing is immoral. The professional wrestler Diamond Dallas Page and his wife, Kimberly, had a cameo that was cut when the test audience failed to give her any reaction. This scene is available on DVD release.
