Michael Schwartz (born April 4, 1970), better known by his stage name Mix Master Mike , is an American turntablist famous for his work with Beastie Boys.

Life and career

Born in San Francisco, California, Mix Master Mike is of German and Philippine descent. Known as a prolific and influential DJ internationally, Mix Master Mike became famous after winning the 1992 New Music Seminar/Supermen Inc., Battle of DJ for World Supremacy in New York City, becoming the first West Coast DJ to do so. That same year, his Steady DJ collective Turntablism won the DMC World DJ Championships, establishing Mike Mix Master as one of the leading DJs in the industry. This success was followed by a victory at the 1993 DMC Championship, this time as part of a duet with DJ Qbert.

Mix Master Mike and DJ Qbert later founded the turntablist group The Invisibl Skratch Piklz with DJ Apollo.

Mix Mix's highest-profile work Mike has with the hip-hop Beastie Boys group. Mix Master Mike worked with bands in Hello Nasty (1998), To The 5 Boroughs (2004), and Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (2011 ). She also appeared on Beastie Boys single "Alive", which was released in 1999 to support Retrospective anthropology's The Sounds of Science . From studio to world tour, Mix Master Mike is now a DJ resident of Beastie Boys, after replacing DJ Hurricane, preceded by Doctor DrÃÆ' Â © (not to be confused with Dr. Dre) who replaces Rick Rubin who is known as DJ Double R.

In 1994, after winning three consecutive DMC World Championships, it was rumored that Mix Master Mike and Q-Bert were asked to retire from further competition, thus not monopolizing the title. This claim is disputed by the DMC World Championship Website. After retiring from the competitive turntablism world, Mix Master Mike and Qbert became judges for the 1995 DMC Championship.

Mike has also helped his fellow DJs produce their own, most famous album, Wave Twisters, by DJ Q-bert.

Mix Master Mike is known for his heavy bass and intricate scratch routines. Mike's Eye of the Cyklops solo album won the best electronic album in 2000 at the California music awards.

In 1995, he was awarded the lifetime achievements of The Grand Wizzard Theodore of the International Turntabs Federation. He has collaborated with artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Lee, Rob Zombie, Fela Kuti and Joss Stone, among others.

In 2002, Mix Master Mike contributed two songs to Red Hot Riot, a compilation CD created by the Red Hot Organization as a tribute to the music and work of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, who raised money for various charities aimed at raising awareness of AIDS and fighting disease and featuring many hip-hop artists and R & other contemporary. He re-created classic songs Fela Kuti, "Interlude: Gimme Shit" and "Water No Get Enemy."

Mix Master Mike is often credited with creating Tweak Scratch. Scratches are performed by moving the recording forward and back when the platter motor is stopped. The inertia of the plate causes the sound to slow down and drop the pitch in an unusual way. He is also famous for his unusual technique of using the wah-wah pedal, an effect most commonly used by guitarists, with his turntables.

Mix Master Mike is shown as a secret character that can be obtained through cheat code in the 2002 snowboarding game SSX Tricky . He also donated the song "Patrol Knob" to the NTSC soundtrack and PAL versions of the 2000 Jet Grind Radio game.

Mix Master Mike is one of 9 artists who participated in Remix thetruth.com Project, where he re-mixed the Sunny Side song "Tough Love".

On March 9, 2010 Mix Master Mike is a guest in the Cool Tricks segment of Yo Gabba Gabba. In December, Mix Master Mike gave a scratch for Frank Zappa's cover "Willie the Pimp", which appeared on iTunes's compilation The Frank Zappa AAAFNRAAAA Birthday Bundle 2010 featuring rapper Darryl McDaniels and Talib Kweli and singing by son Zappa, Ahmet Zappa. On December 2, 2010, Skullcandy and Mix Master Mike unveiled Mike's official Mix Master headphone, released in all major markets including Apple stores, worldwide.

In 2011, Mix Master Mike has joined Travis Barker for several performances promoting his debut album Travis Give Some Drummer - On February 10, 2011, did "Can Some Drummer Get Some?" at Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Travis Barker, Game and Swizz Beatz, and On March 7, 2011, performing "Saturday Night" in Conan with Travis Barker, Transplant, and Elvis Cortez. It was confirmed that Mix Master Mike would be performing with Barker again, joining Barker on his I Am Music Tour in support of Lil Wayne, until March-April 2011.

In June 2011 it was announced that he would present a Saturday night performance on Xfm's alternative radio network from 6 pm - 7 pm for the initial 13 weeks period starting on 9 July. In May 2012, Beastie's children along with Mix Master Mike were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio. In December 2013 Mix Master Mike became the first turntablist to appear at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for The Kennedy Center Honors in honor of Herbie Hancock, performing "Rockit"

In 2018, it was announced by BReal of Cypress Hill that Mix Master Mike will join Cypress Hill.
