Hybrid grass or reinforced natural grass is a product made by combining natural grass with synthetic reinforcing fibers. It is used for stadium pitches and training pitches, which are used for soccer associations, rugby, American football, golf and baseball. The reinforced natural grass can also be used for events and concerts. Synthetic fibers that are inserted into the root zone make the grass stronger and more resistant to damage.
The first generation of hybrid grass appeared in the 1990s. The grass roots are allowed to intertwine with a mixture of sand and synthetic fibers as they grow. Three main methods exist for incorporating synthetic fibers in the root zone. The first is to inject fiber in the sand with a tassel machine. This is the method used to create Desso GrassMaster.
The second method is to mix fiber and sand in the automatic plant and install it afterwards in the field: this process is known as Fibresand.
The third method is to lay mats with woven or tufted fibers on the surface, to brush the sand or sand mixture thereafter to keep the fibers in an upright position and mix the final grass seed. Natural grass roots through the mat and stabilize the system.
Some of the older hybrid grass fields are harder than natural grasses that are not reinforced. It creates concerns about the risk of injury to players and maintenance for park guards. Hence, the sub-base composition for hybrid systems evolves over time. Now often combine the following elements: sand, which is the main component of rootzone; synthetic fibers, to strengthen the pitch; and additional elements to enable softness.
There are several patented technologies that involve hybrid grasses, such as the following examples: XtraGrass developed by Greenfields b.v., SISGrass, developed by SIS Pitches. The latter uses special technology to inject polyethylene fibers into the soil, AirFibr, a technology developed by Natural Grass, which uses natural cork as a softness element, and Fibrelastic, developed by Mansfield Sand, which uses elastane fibers as the element of softness. and GrassMaster, developed by Desso, obtained patents on a hybrid grass system based on injected fibers.
