The Blue Hawaiian is a tropical cocktail made from rum, pineapple juice, Cura̮'̤ao, a sweet acid mixture, and sometimes vodka as well. It should not be likened to the same Blue Hawaiian cocktail (also known as Pool Cocktail) which contains coconut creme instead of sweet and sour mixture.

History and popularity
Blue Hawaii was created in 1957 by Harry Yee, head of the legendary bartender of Hilton Hawaiian Village (formerly Kaiser Hawaiian Village) in Waikiki, Hawaii when the Dutch refin sales representative asked him to design a drink featuring their blue Cura̮'̤ao liqueur. After experimenting with several variations, he chose a slightly different version of the current most popular version, but with the signature blue color, pineapple wedge, and a cocktail umbrella.
The name "Blue Hawaii" only relates indirectly to Elvis Presley's 1961 film of the same name, and apparently derives not from the title of a movie song, a hit made by Leo Robin for the 1937 Wondiki Wedding Bing Crosby

Preparation and variation
A Hawaiian Blue is usually served on the rocks. Like most tropical drinks, there are many variations in preparation, presentation, and ingredients. Therefore, it is often mixed with ice, such as margarita, to be served as a frozen cocktail. Many variations of glasses are used, the stranger the better: mug tiki, cocktail glass, parfait glass, or carved coconut or pineapple.
The liquor base is usually a mild rum but vodka may be partially or completely replaced as a matter of taste. Similarly, flavored rum or vodka such as Malibu Rum can eliminate the need for coconut cr̮'̬me, or the taste of coconut can be completely removed (coconut milk, a very different product, should not be used). Even pineapple juice is sometimes left out for an acid mixture. The only constant, in fact, is the name and blue of Cura̮'̤ao.
Because it is easy and cheap to make, it is often presented as a punch. The simplest, it is a bottle or two of plain rum rum or coconut flavor, a bottle of blue curacao, a can of pineapple juice, and a bag of ice, mixed together in a punchbowl. Hawaii Blue is seasonal, often considered a summer or warm drink. Sometimes, because it contains a yellow pineapple, Hawaii Blue will have a green color instead.
