The American Pit Bull Terrier ( APBT ) is a breed of dog breed recognized by the United Kennel Club and the American Dog Breeders Association. This is a medium-sized, sturdy, intelligent, short-haired dog whose ancestors came from the British Isles. When compared to the British Staffordshire Bull Terrier (another type in a type commonly called pit bulls), the American Pit Bull Terrier is larger with a 6-8 inch (15-20 cm) margin of height and 25-35 pounds (11 to 16 kg) weight. The American Pit Bull Terrier varies in size. Men typically have a height of about 18-21 inches (45-53 cm) and weigh around 35-60 pounds (15-27 kg). Females typically have a height of about 17-20 inches (43-50 cm) and 30-50 pounds (13-22 kg) weight.

The American Pit Bull is medium-sized, and has a short mantle and well-defined smooth muscle structure. His eyes are round to almond-shaped, and his ears are small to medium, usually half-pricked or ridden by train. The tail is a bit thick and shrinks to a point. The coat is shiny, smooth, short, and stiff to the touch. Any color, color pattern, or color combination is acceptable, both ADBA and UKC do not recognize merle dyes. Typical color patterns in this breed are solid, wrinkled, and tuxedo.

Twelve countries in Europe, as well as Australia, Canada, Ecuador, Malaysia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore and Venezuela have enacted some special breeds of pit bull breeds, including American Pit Bull Terriers, ranging from direct ban for restrictions and conditions of ownership. The state of New South Wales in Australia places restrictions on breeds, including compulsory sterilization. This breed is banned in the United Kingdom, in the province of Ontario in Canada, and in many locations in the United States.

History

Pit Bull Terrier was created by breeding Old English Terriers and Old English Bulldogs together to produce a dog that combines the elegance of a terrier with the strength and athletic bulldog. These dogs (named Bull and Terriers) grew up in the British Isles, and arrived in the United States where they became the direct ancestors of the American Pit Bull Terrier. In the UK, Bull-and-terrier is used in blood sports such as bull baits, bear baits. The Bloodsports were officially eliminated in 1835 when the British began introducing animal welfare legislation. Because dogfights are cheaper to set up and are much easier to hide from the law than bulls or bear baits, blood bearers turn into poking their dogs with each other instead. Dog battles are used both as bloodsport (often involving gambling) and ways to continue to test the quality of their stock. For decades thereafter, dog battles were secretly taking place in small areas of England and America. At the beginning of the 20th century, pit bulls were used as catching dogs in America for cattle and semi-wild pigs, for hunting, and moving cattle, and as family friends. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess.

Pit Bull Terrier manages to fill the role of companion dog, and police dog, and dog therapy. The Pit Bull Terrier is also the majority of dogs used to fight illegal dog fighting in the US In addition, law enforcement organizations report these dogs are used for other cruel purposes, such as keeping illegal narcotics operations, use against the police, and as attack dogs.

In an attempt to counter the reputation of a pit bull-type dog fight, in 1996 the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals renamed pit bull terriers to "St. Francis Terrier", so that people may be more likely to adopt them. 60 dogs in uniform temperament were adopted until the program was discontinued, after several newly adopted pit bulls killed the cat. The New York City Animal Care and Control Center attempted a similar approach in 2004, redistributing their pit bulls as "New Yorkies", but dropped the idea in the face of extraordinary public opposition.

Temperament

UKC provides a characteristic description of the American Pit Bull Terrier:

An important characteristic of the American Pit Bull Terrier is the strength, confidence, and passion for life. This breed is eager to please and full of enthusiasm. APBT became a very good family friend and always paid attention to their love for children. Since most APBTs show some degree of dog aggression and because of their strong physicality, APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and train dog carts. The natural dexterity that breed makes it one of the most capable dog rowers so a good fence is a must for this breed. APBT is not the best choice for guard dogs as they are very friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior towards humans is unusual and highly undesirable. This breed is excellent in many shows because of its high level of intelligence and willingness to work.

Standards imposed by ADBA consider human aggression as a disqualification factor. The APDR (American Preservation Dog Registry) standard indicates that "temperament must be absolutely reliable with people ". However, in all standards it is mentioned that dog/animal aggression is common in breeds.

The ATTS (American Temperamen Test Society) has been testing temperaments since 1977 with several breeds of dogs, and to date has tested more than 900 APBT. According to tests conducted by ATTS, APBT has one of the highest approval percentages.

In September 2000, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a study examining the deaths from dog bites (human deaths caused by dog bite injuries) to "summarize dogs involved in fatal human attacks over a 20 year period and to assess policy implications. "The study examined 238 deaths between 1979 and 1998 in which this type of dog was known. It was found that "data indicate that Rottweiler and pit bull type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF [dog bite deaths] in the United States between 1997 and 1998" and that it was "highly unlikely that they were responsible for anywhere near 60 % dogs in the United States during the same period and, thus, there appears to be a specific breed issue with death. "

However, the article goes on to say that care must be taken in drawing conclusions based on this data because:

  • first, the study may account for only about 74% of actual DBRF cases;
  • Secondly, the DBRF record may have been biased by the media's tendency to report attacks by certain breeds over others;
  • third, it is not always easy to identify dog breeds, and records may be biased against reporting of "known" breeds; and
  • fourth, it is unclear how to calculate the mixed breeds.
  • fifth, it has traditionally been used in dog battles with a much higher percentage than others. Thus, the difference in dexterity versus aggressiveness tends to rank very high in Rottweiler and pit bull dogs when compared to other breeds, with human training playing a major role.

The authors conclude by noting that "the breed responsible for human DBRF varies over time" (eg, the Great Danes caused the most reported DBRF between 1979 and 1980). In the face of this inconclusive data, the study authors recommend that breeds should not be "the main drivers of public policy," but make the following policy recommendations: "adequate funding for animal control agents, enforcement of existing animal control laws, and education and strategy policies to reduce the behavior of dogs and inappropriate owners "are likely to be useful and specifically to reduce the occurrence of dog bites.

In a review of a peer review literature of 66 dog-bite risk studies, the American Veterinary Medical Association determined that "the breed is a poor single predictor of dog bites." Controlled studies revealed no increased risk for the group most frequently blamed for dog bites, bull-type. Thus, targeting this type or another as a basis for dog baseball prevention is unfounded. "As stated by the National Animal Control Association:" Dangerous and/or evil animals should be labeled as a result of their actions or behavior and not because of their offspring. "

In 2014, new statistical evidence emerged regarding provincial bans on "pit bulls", more specifically the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier, in the province of Ontario, Canada. Reported to show that since the ban was imposed, dog bites involving two races and dogs of their similarity had dropped dramatically in the largest city in Toronto province, but the overall dog bite reached their highest level in this century in 2013 and 2014.

Health

These breeds tend to have a higher incidence of hip dysplasia than the average. Destruction for performance has helped eliminate these and other problems such as patellar problems, thyroid dysfunction and congenital heart defects. American Pit Bull Terrier with a watery coat color does not have a higher level of skin allergies compared to other breeds. As offspring they are more susceptible to parvovirus than others if not vaccinated, especially as puppies, so vaccination is an important start at 39 days and continues every 2 weeks to 4 months. Then again at 8 months. Once a year thereafter, as a recommendation for all breeds.

They are very vulnerable to Demodex Mange due to its annihilation for performance. There are two types of Demodex Mange, namely Localized and Generalized Demodex. Although not contagious it is sometimes difficult to treat because of immunodeficiency in some puppies. Local Symptoms usually is the loss of hair in small patches on the head and legs of the puppies. This type will usually heal when puppies grow and their immune system grows stronger. The second type which is the Generalized Demodex of scabies is a more severe form of the disease. The symptoms are more severe and include hair loss throughout the body and the skin can also become dirty and bloody. Generalization is usually hereditary because of immunodeficiency genes passed from Sire and Dam to their puppies. A simple skin scrap test will allow the veterinarian to diagnose demodex scabies. The most widely used method for treating Demodex Mange is injection of ivermectin or oral medication. Since Demodex Mange lives in a dog hair follicle, Ivermectin will kill this mite at its source.

Strain

The APBT has several strains/lineages, many of which are from dog fighting, and others are developed to show conformation of the UKC. But at least two strains can be mentioned among some of the most important strains.

Colby pit bulls

The Colby Dog is an ancient black nosed blood line that serves as one of the pillars of the APBT breed. Considered one of the most important strains, and one of the most famous, the Colby dog was started by John P. Colby in 1889, which acquired the best fighting dogs (Bull and Terriers) imported from Ireland and England. One of the most famous dogs of this bloodline is Colby's Pincher . Pincher is known as an unbeatable fighter dog, widely used as a stud dog and for this reason Pincher is present in the pedigree of most APBT specimens. Today, the Colby dog strain is preserved by the John P. Colby family.

Old Family Red Nose

Old Family Red Nose (OFRN) is an old strain of American Pit Bull Terrier known for their distinctive and distinctive reddish color. The OFRN strain dog has a nose and red-copper coat, red lips, red toe nail, and red or yellow eyes.

History OFRN

In the mid-19th century, there was a strain of pit dog in Ireland known as "Old Family." At that time, all the lineages were brought closer to each family clan. Because red is recessive for all colors but white, the strain is known as "Irish Old Family Reds." When dogs begin to come to America, they already show red noses.

Dogs "Old Family Reds" found their way to America in the 19th century mainly through Irish immigrants although many in the United States imported breeds.

Many strains have been crossed with the Old Red Family at some point in their existence. As a result, almost every strain will sometimes throw a red-nosed child. This means that not every red-nose dog is an actual OFRN. The Old Family Reds produce more of their good parts like any other known strain. The Old Red family is sought after because of their high percentage in ability to produce deep gameness. The strain in its purest form continues to be preserved by the breeders who specialize in this lineage.

It used to be famous for its elegance, but now it is bred to maintain its unique reddish color. Some of the most prominent breeders of the past, such as Lightner, McClintock, Hemphill, Williams, Menefee, Norrod and Wallace have contributed to the preservation and development of strains. Finally, as McNolty puts it in his 30-30 Journal (1967). "Regardless of one's historical perspective, these old red-eyed, red-nosed, red-toed, red-plated dogs represent some of the most significant pit bull histories and traditions that stand on four legs today."

Activity

The American Pit Bull Terrier excels in many dog sports, including weight-pullers, dog agility, gliding balls, fishing lures, and advanced compliance competitions. Of the 115 dogs that have earned UKC's "superdog status" (with title in conformation, compliance, agility, and heavy buildup), 34 have American Pit Bull Terriers, and 13 are American Staffordshire Terriers.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a worker's dog, and is suitable for a variety of work disciplines because of their intelligence, high energy, and endurance. In the United States they have been used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs who do narcotics and explosive detection, Border Patrol dogs, hearing dogs to provide services to the hearing impaired, as well as general service dogs. In the South they are often the favorite dogs to catch wild pigs.
